Can't Get Rid of the Gas! Help!?

My LSH was on 6/28. The gas pain is making me miserable! I have tried the green gas pills, liquid Maalox, and nothing is giving me any relief. I am able to have BMs now, but it doesn't help with the gas. Shouldn't the gas be getting better, instead of worse? What can I do?

Re: Can't Get Rid of the Gas! Help!?

The gas pains are probably one of the most painful parts of recovery, I think! It seems like every sister has this complaint - there are several threads about gas and getting rid of it.

I had major gas pains for at least 3 weeks, but everyone is different. You have to find what works for you, here is what worked for me: chewable extra strength Gas-X after every meal and strict avoidance of any food known to be a gas producer (cruciferious veggies, beans, etc.) and spicy foods. I kept my diet really bland for those weeks. I drank lots of water (nothing carbonated) and chewed my food thoroughly. I had far less gas when I did that. It was boring, but less painful.

I also drank lemonade occasionally, a small juice glass full. That would get things moving and out faster to ease any discomfort.

Then, all of a sudden, at about 3 1/2 weeks - gas stopped being excruciating. It still hurts a bit, and I am avoiding the big gassy foods or things that would aggravate my system because I think anything major would be really painful, but I don't bend in half from the pain any longer and I can have spices again (not the really hot ones, though- still waiting on those).

Good luck! I hope you feel better soon!!!

Thanks ladies for your advice. What should I look for in the probiotics? Is that acidophilus or something else?

There are several at your local health food store, the one I took had a blend of 14 different probiotics. It was very helpful. I forgot to add that part of my routine- it was very helpful in balancing everything out.

Re: Can't Get Rid of the Gas! Help!?

I've been taking probiotics and gasx and my gas pains are pretty much over. The fact that I'm eating very small amounts at a time may also be helping. My appetite is improving, but my body seems to only want teensy portions at a time.

Re: Can't Get Rid of the Gas! Help!?

The chewable extra strength Gas-X was my best friend. I'm not sure where you are feeling your gas pains but I had them alot in my shoulder/collarbone area. One of the nurses told me to keep the area with the pain up as high as possible (picturing it like a bubble that wanted to float up) and it would help alleviate the pain... it did for me although it wasn't alot of fun sleeping sitting in an upright position for a couple of nights. Hang in there...it DOES go away!

Re: Can't Get Rid of the Gas! Help!?

Have you checked with your doctor about the pains? I'm wondering if it could be something other than gas. I remember years ago a member wrote that she had terrible pains, but put them off as gas pains. She finally ended up in the emergency room, where it was discovered she had a blood clot in her abdomen.

I'm not saying that's what you have, but it wouldn't hurt to call your doctor and let him/her know.

Hope you feel better soon.
