Ovaries - to keep or not to keep???
I am scheduled for TAH in September due to severe endo and the only thing I haven't decided on yet is whether to keep my ovaries or not? And I don't know why I should or shouldn't??? I have an appointment with my gyn in July and will of course discuss it with him, but (since he knows me and my history) by the sound of it, he plans on taking them because he mentioned giving me a hormone shot before I even leave the operating room. Can some people please give me some input on keeping them or not? And why? It is all appreciated! Thanks!

Hi Skeigh
You are very young to be losing your ovaries. Usually we recommend that young women (under 45ish) keep their healthy ovaries. Your doctor may be concerned the the endometriosis in on your ovaries which would cause you future problems.
I think it is wise that you will be discussing this with your regular doctor also.
It is advantageous to keep your healthy ovaries as you can delay menopause, and taking HRT, until you reach the age of natural menopause. But unfortunately that is not possible for everyone.
You might also want to visit the Hormone Jungle to get some ideas on what is available and what to expect with HRT.

The hormone shot you will get in the hospital will last about a month, perhaps longer. Then you will need to go on some additional HRT. I am sure the doctor will discuss this with you. If not please bring it up in advance so you can be prepared.

Mine are outa here!
Hi Skeigh.
I'm scheduled for a TAH/BSO on 6/10. I'm 33 and suffer from endo. I visited with friends and family and doctor. The reason we decided to take them was that doc was concerned that they may also be responsible for part of my pain, and didn't want to take the chance of having to go back in again. I agreed...cut me open once and get it all out now!!
That is my decision. Maybe if you make a list of pro's and con's it will help make things a little easier.
I wish you luck with this difficult decision!!
's and ers coming your way!!
Hang in there. It will get better!!!
