Myomectomy vs hysterectomy - your results?

I am considering a myomectomy instead of a hysterectomy and am looking for feedback on your procedure and results. My uterus and ovaries are fine, but I have this HUGE fibroid - about 11cm, grapefruit size - which is in the wall of the uterus and can only be removed surgically - bikini cut. Because of my age -49 - the doctor does not recommend a myomectomy. Dr concerns include size of fibroid - could have lots of bleeding and still have to do hysterectomy, past natural childbearing years, and don't want to have second surgery later if fibroids grow back or hysterectomy needed. I have one child already. Would love another but cannot consider pregnancy at my age nor with the fibroid. It is emotional for me to give up the uterus - I know, that sounds crazy at my age, but it just is - but I really want the fibroid gone. I have a belly bump, my uterus is about the size of a 5 month pregnancy, and I don't want to exercise or really do anything. I've already tried acupuncture, and had the focused ultrasound procedure which did not work on my fibroid. I'm just wondering if anyone can share their results of a myomectomy or decision to forego it and do the hysterectomy instead. Thanks!

I was faced with the same decision a few months ago. My sub mucosal fibroid was (at the time) 5.5cm and had taken over the uterine cavities, forcing my IUD out. I also had 5 other fibroids that weren't causing any issues. My doctor said she could do a laparoscopic myomectomy, but there was no guarantee that she would be able to get all of the troublesome fibroid, and the other 5. She was also concerned that because of m family history, my fibroids would return 3-5 years later...forcing me to get a hysterectomy. She laid out all the pros and cons to both surgeries, and then left it up to me to decide. After a long talk with my husband, we decided that a hysterectomy would be the best option. I'm only 33 with one child, and it was a hard decision. But I had to think about the quality of my life. This fibroid made daily activities impossible, and the constant bleeding was making me anemic. I want to live a life full of passion and fun, and I just couldn't do it with these fibroids. So on Jan 31st, I had a total laparoscopic hysterectomy (uterus, cervix, and tubes gone), and 2 weeks later, I feel so good physically and emotionally!
