Is there really a connection?

I've been reading a lot of posts since my hysterectomy. Is there really a connection with a hyst. and weight gain? Are you more prone to gain weight if you also had your ovaries removed?

Re: Is there really a connection?

I would say there probably is not a direct correlation, just other variables that might come into play,eg less exercise while recovering continuingon after feeling better, depression, change in diet, being older (metabolism slowing etc).
I had my ovaries removed, no HRT, and am exactly same weight as pre-surgery. I am only a sample of one - maybe others could share their experiences.

Re: Is there really a connection?

Hi, I have lost a little weight and I am maintaining so far.

I have hypothyroidism so I have to really watch it or I can gain weight so fast it will make your head spin.

I started walking around the block day 5, gradually increased the distance each day. I was up to 2 miles by 2 weeks and I currently walk 3 to 3.5 miles per day. I'm going to get back to the gym in the next few days and get into a light workout. (I was cleared by my doctor last week)

I agree with zany that there are a lot of factors influencing whether or not you gain weight.

Generally, if you are eating right, managing your calorie intake and exercising sufficiently you should be able to maintain or lose weight. I know people who have lost.

I kept my ovaries so hrt has not been a factor for me.

Re: Is there really a connection?

kickdrumheart!!

That is a very good question and one that a lot of women ask. I do not think there is a connection with hysterectomy and weight gain.

Here is an article you might find interesting and helpful:

Weight Gain After Hysterectomy?

I had always heard that hysterectomy would lead to weight gain and my DH was actually very happy to hear that since he has alway thought I was a little too thin. However, instead of gaining weight after my surgery, I lost 35 lbs!! I have a smaller appetite and my food cravings are much different. I used to be addicted to candy and chocolate, but now, I don't eat much of it at all. I eat more fruits and vegetables.

If you eat healthy foods, get plenty of exercise, and make other good lifestyle choices, weight gain will probably not be an issue for you. Of course there are women who do gain weight after hysterectomy, but it is likely due to being less active during recovery or some other underlying reason. Hysterectomy does not "make" a women gain or lose weight.

Re: Is there really a connection?

I lost 5 lbs. after my hyst. And am now maintaining. I wish it would have been 10! Haha. Anyway. I am not as hungry and don't crave sweets. I am also tring to eat better and walking. No excersie for me yet, but can't wait! I had everything out and I'm on the Estradiol patch, which is perfect for me.

Re: Is there really a connection?

I also lost 5 lbs and am maintaining that... I have arthritis in my ankle, so exercise has always been limited for me....I eat a LOT of salad. I have been walking, maybe .5 mile a day, which is not a lot, but I figure every little bit helps my tummy swells pretty bad by the time I am done with just that much!

Crazy, I know. My said that it was NOT related to the hysterectomy though, so really not sure why I dropped all those pounds
