Surgeon removed ovaries by mistake

I turned 40 two months ago. I have been suffering from severe anemia due to 12 large fibroids in my uterus. My gynecologist suggested a hysterectomy, removing just the uterus and keeping the ovaries because of my age. After two other opinions, I decided to proceed with a supra cervical hysterectomy in which she would leave my cervix and ovaries in tact.

I had my surgery two weeks ago. I came out of surgery very excited and hopeful to finally 'get back to being me' before all the pain and lethargy crept in to overtake my life. As I opened my eyes, my gynecologist tells me she made a mistake which resulted in her having to take both of my ovaries. She is so sorry. I asked her if there was anything wrong with my ovaries and her reply was, "No they were perfectly healthy. I just cut the wrong blood vessels and I noticed mid-way thru the surgery that they were dying, so I had to remove them both. I'm so sorry." I just started crying and I looked up and she was also wiping tears from her eyes!

Now I have to take hormone replacement therapy. I am so sad, disappointed and angry all at the same time. I'm having trouble sleeping, always hungry, moody, having crying spells, temperature hard to regulate-all symptoms from this hormone replacement patch. The Dr immediately reached out to the hospital's risk mgt team and told them of her mistake. Someone finally contacted me today, after my two week follow up with the Dr yesterday. Has anyone had anything similar happen to them? I'm tired of crying so much!

Oh my gosh! I just want to say how sorry I am. That is really scary. I just wanted to let you know I am thinking of you. Try and remember to rest and heal during all of this. Take one thing at a time. Keep us posted. Sending you a hug.

First off let me tell you your in my prayers and I'm so very sorry you have to go thru this. I had a similar experience but with a pregnancy that was terminated due to a doctor.

Don't know if this offers any comfort, but a fam member had hers out and never took anything after, no hot flashes . There is always the risk of complications, take one hour at a time and one day at a time. We're you having any perimenopausal symptoms before surg ? My prayers for healing are w u .

Re: Surgeon removed ovaries by mistake

Take the time to grieve the loss. Let no one tell you how long to grieve. Take the time and space you need. Crying is okay, and can be cathartic. Talk with a loved one - husband, parent, best friend - or a counselor - someone that will listen and offer support. Talk to your doctor, when you are ready, and discuss all the options.

And remember, we are so much more than the sum of our parts.
Wishing you peace and healing.

Georgiarose,
No, I had not started having any signs of menopause. I just turned 40 in December. I've never had any issues with my ovaries.

Re: Surgeon removed ovaries by mistake

Thanks so much for your support. Listening to some of your stories about these life altering hospital errors is so saddening. Thanks so much for sharing. I know medicine is a practice, but so many of these mistakes could be prevented with just a little attention to detail!
