Fibroids, does size matter???
I am scheduled for LSH on Sept. 25 and my pre-op is Sept 18. I have lots of questions for my doctor that day but I am wondering about something. She said during my SIS ultrasound that I have 3 walnut to golf ball sized fibroids. One inside the uterus, one on top and one in back pressing against my colon. Are those considered large? And 3? Is that a lot of them or typical? She was surprised I have not had more pain or constipation, only very heavy periods, gushers. ugh.

Fibroids, does size matter???
I have one grapefruit size fibroids and many small, and the funny thing is they do not cause alot of bleeding, just some pelvic pain and some incontinece, I'm having a TAH because of the size of my uterus and fibroids. I have read on this site there have been football size ones and larger.
good luck with your surgery

Fibroids, does size matter???
I've been told that size can influence whether a Hysterectomy can be done with a laprascope.
I have multiple fibroids (don't know how many) and the largest appearst to be about 8cm.
The doctor was concerned more about whether they were calcified (hard) than their size. The ultrasound seems to reflect that they are NOT calcified. That said, I think I have good odds for an LSH vs. abdominal but I probably won't know until I wake up.

Fibroids, does size matter???
I had about 8 fibroids and the largest was about 6cm. I did not have heavy bleeding but I was in sever pelvic pain 24/7 every day of the month.
I had the surgery because of the fibroids but after the surgery we found out the fibroids were not the cause of all my pain. I also had Adenomyosis which was not found till pathology was complete and a left ovary that was the size of a baseball with 2 very large nasty cysts attached to it. Neither the cystic ovary or the Adenomyosis was found till surgery. I had 3 MRI's, 2CT's many many internal and external sonograms and the only thing that ever showed was the fibroids.
Good luck with your surgery. I hope your recovery is quick and smooth.

Fibroids, does size matter???
The size of mine (2.2 lbs or 1000 grams) dictated the kind of incision they could do. A smaller one would have let them do a bikini cut, smaller still would have been laparascopic. As it was, they needed the work room.
Size will also dictate how long they need to keep you on the table and how long you will take to heal.

Fibroids, does size matter???
I had over 30 fibroids between the sizes of .5 and 3.5 cm. They changed over the years, because when I was pregnant with my ds, the largest was "softball" sized - much larger than 3.5 cm.
It isn't size or quantity which means as much in terms of fibroids, however. Often it's the location, or the type of fibroid, which causes more issues. The fact that one of yours is pressing on your colon, for instance, may be why your doc is thinking you could be in more pain than you are.
In other words, one woman could have a huge (and they do get as large as watermelons!) fibroid and never feel it, yet another woman could have one the size of a grape (like mine were) and be in all sorts of pain. It just depends.
My uterus was 15x10x7 cm, but it wouldn't have been a long surgery at all if my uterus and bladder hadn't been adhered together. That added an hour to my surgery! There are all sorts of variables which might impact your surgery and recovery -- what we print here are merely guidelines for you to follow.
Hope this helps.

Fibroids, does size matter???
The only fibroid my doc ever talks about with me is the alien. That one is on the outside of my uterus connected at the top and is 25cm x 13cm x 17cm. It is partially calcified and with my uterus is estimated at about 15lbs.
Needless to say... I will be having a vertical abdominal hyst.
