Increasing back pain-fibroids

Wondering if anyone who has or has lived with fibroids can weigh in on this one?

My surgery is scheduled for December. In the meantime, I am managing symptoms from fibroids. Bleeding is under control with Provera (20mg/2 times /day). However, I am experiencing increasing paid in my lower back. Over the last 3 months it has worsened. Can anyone tell me what this means? Are the fibroids growing?? My doc has given me Tylenol with Codeine to manage the pain, but even that is not working now. Any suggestions for something else to try? I know I can manage anything until December, but the worsening pain is worrying me and distracting me from LIFE!

Your thoughts??

Re: Increasing back pain-fibroids

My increasing lower back pain was one reason I sought a hysterectomy in the first place. I, too, had fibroids--one on the outside of my uterus on the back side and many more on the inside. Since the surgery, my back pain is gone.

I'd say it's entirely possible that the fibroids kind of fluctuate or grow according to your cycle. Do keep checking in with your doctor if it gets alarmingly worse, but trust that you'll feel much better once your surgery is over. Good luck!

Re: Increasing back pain-fibroids

Hi lvmylif:
We are in the same boat. I too have fibroids with back pain. My surgery had been scheduled for 12/18/09. Nothing that I have taken from over the counter had helped. My doctor has little sympathy for me. He wanted to perform my surgery back in June, but I wanted to wait until I finished school. If you come across something that helps with the pain, please share.

Re: Increasing back pain-fibroids

Whoa, we are in the same boat! My surgery date is also 12/18. I just started an MBA program in June and needed to wait until we had a break or fall behind in my program!!

I will definitely update you if I find a way to manage this. I plan to call the doctor tomorrow and see. But I am afraid it will mean heavier drugs...800mg of IB, with Tylenol is not cutting it and the Tylenol with Codeine only help a little. I live on the heating pad!! As afraid as I am about going through surgery, it will be worth it if I don;t have to live with this anymore.

Best to you! Keep in touch.

Re: Increasing back pain-fibroids

I'm there with you too! I've got one large fibroid that started on the back wall of my uterus and has grown straight through to the inside. I also have several smaller fibroids. The large one is evidently bugging a bundle of nerves that make my lower back and hips scream with pain, and it seems to be unrelated to my period, unlike my ice-pick cramps. My doctor, bless her, gave me Darvocet. It takes a good two hours to kick in, but it's really been helping me greatly. Evidently it's similar to Vicodin, although it's hard for me to compare since I'm allergic to Vicodin.

Something someone else here suggested for me was sleeping with a body pillow. When I hurt, I sleep on my side curled around it so it keeps my hips aligned and prevents my shoulders from hunching together. Between that and the meds, at the very least I can sleep!

Good luck, and take heart. You are certainly not alone, and it's not long now!
