8 days post op-laparopscopic/open/bladder injury hysterectomy

I am 8 days post op today, it is only my 3rd day home. I was scheduled for a laparoscopic hysterectomy to include my cervix on 6/1/11. Unfortunately when my doctor got in there he realized that my uterus was too big and decided he needed to do it open. He went through my 1 yr old c-section scar and hit an artery. I started bleeding out and in his hurry to get through scar tissue and get me open to control the bleed, he sliced open my bladder. I had to have 2 blood transfusions which makes me mad because before surgery I asked to donate my own blood and my surgeon refused saying this is a bloodless surgery. I have a catheter for 2 weeks, which I hate. I have been doing well since my 3rd day post op, refusing pain meds because I didn't need them but today the pain got horrible. I have an appt in the morning with my GYN because I am more swollen on the left side of the large open incision than anywhere else. Has anyone else been through all of this? Can you tell me what this new, just today, swelling is and why all of the sudden I am needing to take pain meds for all of the pain?

Re: 8 days post op-laparopscopic/open/bladder injury hysterectomy

Some of your pain may be due to post-operative swelling. Also, some of the stitches start dissolving at about a week. I would be very careful to look for signs of infection, though, as this is also a point where that can become a problem. If you have any doubt, contact you physician. Better safe than sorry!
