Emotional mess- No HRT

I had the following removed on Dec 18: ovaries, tubes, uterus, & cervix due to early stage breast cancer & BRCA 2 mutation. I've had 3 episodes of moodiness & crying for no reason. I realize I've been through a lot these past few months (bilateral mastectomy in July) but I'm not depressed. The episode starts with moodiness upon waking then the crying starts & I have to just let the tears flow which can take several hours. It's physically exhausting! Can anyone suggest antidepressants that work best?

Re: Emotional mess- No HRT

Estrogen is a precursor to serotonin a neurotransmitter in the brain. When your ovaries are removed and estrogen drops it effects serotonin levels in the brain and that will cause depression and moodiness. Talk to your doc about starting an SSRI antidepressant. SSRI stands for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Essentially what it does is allow what serotonin you have to remain in the nerve synapse longer and makes it more available as a neurotransmitter. I have been on Prozac for many years for chronic depression and found that it helped with hormonal issues of PMS and menopause also. There are many different SSRI's. Basically their chemistry is very similar but each is tweaked a little differently. Many people have found that if one or two of the SSRI's don't help a third one may. Sometimes you just have to be patient and experiment until you find the right one, because each of us has a little different chemistry too. Are you on tamoxifen? If so than you need to talk about it with doc as some of the SSRI's use the same liver pathways for break down as tomoxifen and can cause the tamoxifen to be less effective. Off the top of my head I'm not sure which ones, but if you google tamoxifen and SSRIs I'm sure you'll find the list. The other SSRIs don't have the same effect and can be used. If you are not on tomoxifen, it won't matter which one you try first.
