Question about surg and birth control pills

Has anyone taken birth control pills right up until their surgery? My doctor put me on Femcon and wants me to take them until my LSH on Dec. 16th. I've been taking various different brands for over 20 years but I heard you should stop taking them a bit before surgery or the risk for blood clots is high. Anyone have any thoughts?

I was told to take mine right up until surgery!

Only your doctor knows what is best for you! So if you have concerns, talk to your doctor.

Re: Question about surg and birth control pills

My Doc and I were discussing my upcoming LaVH and hormone (replacement!???). Doc said, "...you're already on hormones, anyway...." (She was talking about the birth control pills and Synthroid I already take as my form of HRT post-op!).

I have NOT been told to stop taking my pills. The ONLY meds my doc told me to stop taking?
Anaprox.
Because of the bleeding risk during the surgery.
I've been on that mess for ONE YEAR solid...550mg/2x day. I haven't taken any this week so far. Thank the Lord for Tylenol.

STAY on whatever meds you are taking for now.
Your doc will let you know "when".

Re: Question about surg and birth control pills

Thank you all for your replies. You have no idea how glad I was to find this website after I was told that a hysterectomy was most likely needed. Although I'm still terrified, Its a very comforting feeling knowing you are all here.

Re: Question about surg and birth control pills

Hi, I had LSH on October 25th was on seasonale until my surgery, took my last BCP on October 24th the night before surgery, I had asked my dr when and if I should discontinue them and she said to stay on up until surgery so I wouldnt have another doosy period like my last one, it worked for me go ahead and check with your dr but that is what my dr had said to me. My recovery has been very uneventful and I am very glad that I had LSH very little pain if any and it will be worth it in the long run to end all my troubles! Good luck to you!
