18 hours post hysterectomy: nauseous but starving - advice on what to eat?
Just had a robotic hysterectomy 18 hrs ago, everything but the ovaries. I had the worst dry mouth post op and ending up drinking... In the realm of 12-15 glasses of water/ice chips. Then I wanted something to eat (I asked for jello) but the nurse brought me a dry turkey sandwich. It took 3-4 glasses of water just to get the turkey down (didn't eat the bun)... I think the turkey paired with the anaesthesia made me very I'll and I threw up, a lot. Now at 18 hours I'm still fairly nauseous, but also starving.. Anyone have any advice on when and what to eat?

Re: When did everyone first eat after hysterectomy?
They gave me food too. Which I thought I wanted, but when it came down to eating it I just couldn't. Same thing , super dry mouth. I had my surgery In the morning so this was an attempt at lunch. By the time dinner came I could eat it. Good luck.

I had robotic assisted hysterectomy yesterday. Crackers and jello settled well. Also chicken soup was good. I had a little nausea and that terrible dry mouth you described. It is all slowly dissipating. Dr just came in and told me I'd be discharged around 10am!!! So glad! Hope your recovery improves!

I don't know what the nurse was thinking with that turkey sandwich! Expect your appetite to be wonky for the next week or two. Healthy snacks every couple/few hours may work better than regular sized meals. Eat what your body wants. If it wants jello, eat jello. For the first week, my body wanted fresh fruit, yogurt, peanut butter on whole grain toast and canned lentil soup.

I had severe nausea for the first 3 wks. Couldn't eat nearly anything but dang did I puff up like a marshmallow. I ended up living on toast , noodles and mashed potato along with a lot of fluid. A LOT of fluid - tea, water etc. I wouldn't normally eat such a carb heavy diet but that's all I could keep down. I struggled with the nausea for about 3-4 wks post op. Back to normal diet around week 4-5.

I also had extremely dry mouth afterwords. I had to stick to broth and crackers the first meal. Basically I acted like I had a stomach bug and ate like that. Ask for nausea meds. Even after being home for awhile I had to take them once in awhile. I had fruit and jello as my next two meals and by dinner the next night I was able to eat a grilled chicken sandwich. I will be 3 weeks post op on Monday and still have issues with my appetite. Nothing sounds good and most this taste bland. I'm wondering if it may be a vitamin thing because I have wanted something but haven't been able to figure it out for weeks.

Re: 18 hours post hysterectomy: nauseous but starving - advice on what to eat?
I have no appetite whatsoever. I've been munching on the same small cup of apple sauce for two days. My taste buds are horrible and I feel nauseous as ever. What helps?

Re: 18 hours post hysterectomy: nauseous but starving - advice on what to eat?
Peppermint tea can help with nausea and so can ginger anything - tea, candy, gum, capsules.
Also, if you're not hungry, don't feel compelled to rush into eating. I had an abdominal surgery with a three-day hospital stay. The first day after surgery, I didn't get anything except water. The second day, I got "progressive liquids" - liquids and mushy solids. I wasn't given regular food at all the third day, when the hospital gave me breakfast and lunch before releasing me.
At home, I did what I do when I'm having problems eating due to a depressive episode: small portions every few hours of whatever my body is willing to swallow and keep down. My first meal at home was some yogurt with rhubarb sauce and a bread roll. The next day my work place had a fruit basket delivered. I had the delivery guy set it down right next to my computer. Because it was *right there*, I was more likely to actually eat some of it from time to time.
Remember to get plenty of fluids, because your body actually needs fluids more than food at this point. Try to get some protein if you can manage it - yogurt, peanutbutter and soy and/or nut milks usually work well for me. Don't sweat the fact that you're eating carbs or whatever. Just try to get your body to swallow a bit of something every few hours and keep it down.
Also, walk as much as your body is comfortable with (within your doc's restrictions, of course). The activity will help stimulate your appetite.

I ate a lot of soup, and jello. If you can walk, even if it's just to the mailbox, give it a shot.
And welcome!

Jello was the only thing that sounded good to me.
