Upcoming hysterectomy: Fibriods and mid cycle pain

Hi
This is my first REAL post, im on a waiting list for TAH which im expecting to have by mid november.
I have 3 fibriods i call my fruit salad babies, 7cm, 4cm & 2cm. I have had increasing pain occuring mid cycle, which is crippling at times. Im just wondering if its worth getting checked out or should i soldier on until my surgery.
I was diagnised with fibriods in August with similar symptoms- i just thought the change in my periods were due to the CHANGE...

Upcoming hysterectomy: Fibriods and mid cycle pain

Hi, How old you? May I also ask why TAH? Aren't you a candidate for laparoscopic? The reason I am asking these questions, is because I am scheduled for my da Vinci robotic surgery on October 18. I have very large fibroid and I had one shot of Lupron last month and the second one on Thursday to shrink the fibroids prior to surgery.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy: Fibriods and mid cycle pain

Hi im 41, my gyn has told me given the size of my uterus and the fibriods they can see it would most likely end up being a TAH rather than laproscopic as ut would take too long to break down the larger fibriod.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy: Fibriods and mid cycle pain

Candykane. I multiple fibroids as well, my largest one being 10cm having doubled in size over 4 months after just hanging out for 18 years. Two other sizeable 'broids were found on the ultrasound, though I don't know the measurements. During surgery, doc lost count at 15!

If your pain is crippling mid-cycle, you've got 6 or so weeks to go before your surgery, possibly 2 more cycles. It sounds like this isn't new, but that it's getting worse? I'd at least put a call in to see about pain management. In my younger years, I've blacked out from menstrual pain before - not fun.

If possible I'd seek another opinion to see if you would be a candidate for laparoscopic surgery. I was blessed that my doc's preferred way of doing surgery is laparoscopic; with decades of experience, and he was able to perform LSH with me despite my large fibroid and multiple other ones he found. My surgery lasted 2-1/2 hours, just a little longer than average.

Upcoming hysterectomy: Fibriods and mid cycle pain

Good morning Candykane, another fibroid sister here! My "fruit salad" included a jumbo grapefruit pressing on my bladder, as well as 2 oranges and a small plum. Most surgeons don't have the high level of skill that's required for a laparoscopic procedure, especially on fibroids that large, and will default to an abdominal procedure, because that's what they're most comfortable doing, so I agree with Cussette about seeking a second opinion. I was fortunate that my doctor was able to find a fibroid specialist who was able to do a laparoscopic procedure, and he prescribed 2 monthly shots of Lupron to enable it. Fibroids can cause pain and other menstrual issues, depending on where they're located, so it's important to see someone who can properly evaluate your situation, and determine an appropriate course of action. Best wishes for whatever happens!

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy: Fibriods and mid cycle pain

Thanks ladies for your advise. Im in Australia and am on a waiting list so i will be seen by another gyn before my surgery. Unfortunately because i am using our public sysyem i wont get to choose my surgeon so i will be ending up with that second opinion anyway. At the end of the day id would certainly prefer lapro to the TAH because i cant afford anymore time off work than i need to take.
My biggest concern at the moment is the increased pain, i have been taking a ponstan (period pain) which isnt really doing anything anymore.
Thanks again ladies, i can tell already the support here is huge

I am 15 days since my TAH and I already know I made the right decision. The post op pain for me (on 800mg ibuprofen) is already less than I experienced monthly while I was alternating acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Those fibroids were so awful that it changed the way I lived my life. I'm sure many of you can relate to that. Now I am getting better every day and very much looking forward to being pain free each month!
