side effects from anesthesia

Hi Sisters. I am 4 days post- op and I am experiencing extreme dry mouth and it seems as if my taste buds went to sleep. I can't really taste anything, so I really don't have an appetite. I have been drinking a lot of water because of my mouth being so dry. I was just wondering if anybody else experienced this and if so how long does this last. I was told that this is a side effect of the anesthesia. Thanks Ladies.

Hi Lynn!!!!!
Glad to see you are recovering from the surgery. You are probably experiencing dry mouth as a side effect from the anesthesia. If you are taking pain medication, these can also cause dry mouth as well I take several medications, for other conditions besides the surgery, and I drink water and juices constantly.
The more water you drink, the better. It will help your bowels too--keep you "regular".

If you have any more questions, feel free to pm me or just post here. The sisters will not hesitate to help you out!
Hoping you get stronger as days go by.
Keep the faith,
wee

Yup, had the very same thing happen to me! It took nearly 2 weeks for things to change. Many, many things didn't taste very good for a while and some still don't!

i am a soda drinker about 12 a day, however, beginning the day of my surgery,i could not get rid of my dry mouth, and soda actually tasted nasty to me..the only way to even relieve a little of my dry mouth was very very cold icewater..i am still drinking this today...so i believe this is normal...sonie

ditto

For me, the taste-buds started to wake-up after a couple of weeks. I still have days when nothing really sounds good to eat, though. Guess that could be a good thing?

It just takes time for all the meds to vacate your system.

Hang in there!

side effects from anesthesia

It took me three weeks till I could see straight and taste anything. I would talk to people and not remember who they were when they left or what was said. I am just starting to feel like a live being again and that didn't even come close to happening until my third week post op, some people just react to the anestheisa alot more than others I guess.Hang in there, it will get better

Lynn,

yes, same thing here - very dry mouth for a few days after the op, and although I am a food-lover nothing really attracts me right now (good for loosing those few extra pounds though!). Even the ice cream seems way to sweet now - although I eat at least a cup every day.
