I had TAH/BSO on May 9th as I was diagnosed with uterine cancer. On HRT for 10 years. Stopped estrogen two weeks before surgery. I'm having lots of trouble sleeping at night and I think I'm waking up with night sweats. Is this possible at my age? I'm not taking naps during the day and I feel really tired when I go to bed.

It isn't the age, it's the cessation of estrogen. Unfortunately we can't escape it!

A friend of mine has a hysterectomy about 25 years ago and took HRT until she was about 65. She still had menopause symptoms when she quit, though she said they weren't too bad at all.

Hopefully your symptoms will be mild.

Hi, tvltech!

Absolutely it is possible! Even women who were in natural menopause prior to surgery report that they experience menopausal symptoms after the ovaries are removed. After menopause the ovaries produce trace amounts of beneficial hormones. Plus, you were already using hormones and then stopped--that's enough to cause the symptoms you describe.

Have you talked to your doctor about resuming hormone therapy, or are you not interested in using hormones now? It's something worth discussing with your doctor if you are uncomfortable.

Being tired after surgery is also normal. It does take a while to bounce back. I hope you can rest comfortably during your recovery!
