hard spot under incision at 3 week post op?

I have a question. I had a TAH on 5/18 and everything seems to be going really well. I am up to walking 3 miles a day, incision looks great--no reddness etc.., have had no drainage from incision or vaginally from day 1, still get tired easily and swelly belly by the end of the day but that seems normal. My question is, if I feel along my incision and press down, it feels very hard underneath, especially in the middle of the incision ( I had about a 6inch bikini incision). I have read so much about hematomas and things I just wondered if this was normal. My post-op check up is at 5 weeks (june 22nd) and we are hoping to be cleared to go on vacation the following day to the outer banks, NC. I don't want to have any surprises at the 5 week check up like they have to open me back up and pack it or something!! This web site has been a great source of comfort--thanks to all of you!!

Your TAH is the same day as mine. It sounds like your recovery is going well.. I am recovering from some post op complications (heamatoma and infection) last week but this has really cleared up. The redness and infection seem to be gone but I was concerned about this hard spot in my incision as well. The home care nurse coming in to the house to irrigate my incision (from the infection) told me that the hard area is scar tissue?? It is always best to ask your Dr. if you are concerned... take care... I can't imagine walking 3 miles... I made it to the end of my drive way yesterday and I thought that was an accomplishment!!

Okay first....3 miles!!!!....you go girl... I couldn't even do that before.

As for the hard spot. I didn't have an abdominal, but last year I had my gall bladder out and had four incisions. The biggest one (about 1.5 in.) had a hard spot for about 6 mon. or more. The doc said it was scar tissue and would soften with time. But by all means ask. That is what they get the big bucks for.

I had hard spots under mine and just noticed in the last couple of days they are now gone. If they bother you or you are worried I would ask the doctor though.

Hi Sisters!!

First and foremost, if you are concerned please ask your doctor.

I have the scar tissue you mention. I'm over 8 months out. I was told to massage the area and it will soften more quickly. I have been doing that and it has made a big difference! I can massage fairly deeply into my abdomen now, but at first I could not. I just gauged how deep to go based on how comfortable it felt.

Good luck to you!

HUGS!

I also developed the hard rope under my incision and my doctor said it is a keloid (you can read about it if you search Goggle) and prescribed a steroid ointment to put on it. Some people are prone to the keloids and others aren't.
