17 days post hysterectomy: Constipation & tummy issues

I had my TVH on 10/3. I am having a terrible time with swelling, pain ( feels like my tummy has a pulse), and constipation. I am taking Colace, Dulcolax, walking and icing my tummy, it feels so much harder to have a BM. I ordered the belly binder from the store today and maybe this will help. Anyone else having these problems?? I am miserable

Re: 17 days post hysterectomy: Constipation & tummy issues

I am 3 days post op and I am having serious constipation problems. I'm on colace too. I think it might seem worse because we're not able to 'really' push to get it all out. Had my first bm yesterday after 4 days and I still don't feel 'cleaned out'.

Re: 17 days post hysterectomy: Constipation & tummy issues

I am on day 13 and am still constipated as well. This was an issue prior to surgery so not a surprise. I tried stool softeners and then had luck with a laxitive but had pretty bad cramping. Just started MOM yesterday and had some relief today. Others have shared that increasing their water intske was the key. Good luck!

Re: 17 days post hysterectomy: Constipation & tummy issues

My surgery was 10/3 as well. I have had regular bowel movements since Saturday (the day I came home from the hospital). I have, though, had to take stool softeners every day. Even with taking them I still have to strain a little to go. I'm taking iron supplements which almost negate the stool softeners. I'm happy I've been able to go at least. I swell like crazy still and get really gassy, but that is my only issue.

Re: 17 days post hysterectomy: Constipation & tummy issues

Hi ladies! I had my TVH on 9/17. Was pain free for the most part when I came home. The ONLY problem I did have was constipation! Which was so bad I developed hemorrhoids from straining (which have now healed)...thank God! Anywho, my constipation cleared up once I got off of my pain meds(which for the most part are narcotics) and one of the side effects of narcotics is constipation! So IF you still need pain meds opt for something like Motrin or a higher dosage Ibuprofin. Also remember that the meds from your anesthesia are still in your body on top of that, which definitely caused your bowels to become sluggish. I also drank lots and lots of water, took Metimucil(stay away from the one with artificial sweetener) three times a day until your BMs are regular. I took it for about a week until I had gotten down to just one dose a day(at night before going to bed). I can't stress the importance of eating healthy as well. Aslo, one of the ladies on my recovery thread mentioned the squatty potty(Google it).ordered myself one and wallah...it worked like a charm!! No straining, everything just falls out(sorry if that's TMI). But if you're unable to get one, find a box, stepping stool or anything stable enough to put both feet on that's around 7 inches tall and use that. I hope this helps ladies! Unfortanately, this is just a part of recovery for some of us, but I promise, it does get better!!😊

Re: 17 days post hysterectomy: Constipation & tummy issues

Also, I forgot to mention..walking on flat surfaces helps to jolt the bowels and also chewing gum...crazy IKR! But it's something about chewing gum that fools the bowels into thinking you're eating and it supposedly wakes them up. Go figure! 😊
