Upcoming hysterectomy for adenomyosis: will adeno pain continue if ovaries are retained?

i am scheduled for hysterectomy october 1st, and doing research. doc suggested i keep my ovaries for heart reasons, since i have family history. but i *think* i have read here that some women with adenomyosis experienced pain afterwards, and they had to remove the ovaries and then had no more pain. is that something i just think i read, or is that true in some cases? i've been searching all over and cant find the references i am thinking of, so it might be all in my head!

thanks for any info you can give me about pain afterwards with saved ovaries.

With ovaries, you may experience cyclical pain because you'll still have cycles, just not the bleeding to go along with it. Like, if you had discomfort during ovulation before surgery, you may still get that. From my research, adeno is contained in the uterus; I've never heard of it spreading to ovaries. I have both ovaries and was diagnosed post-op with adeno and I've had no pain (outside of recovery pain).

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy for adenomyosis: will adeno pain continue if ovaries are retained?

I'd say my adeno pain is gone. Had a couple of months during period time, that'd I'd have a couple of hours of cramping. I had a TVH, so didn't keep cervix. My adeno was extensive and that lead ball uterus feel was gone by the time I woke in recovery. Yes I'm so much improved from adeno after the hysterectomy. Still having a few issues, but I think I'm just slow to heal. I'm so much more active than I was w adeno! I was pretty much in the bed alot and not anymore !

maybe it was the ovulation pain that people were discussing. hmmm, interesting. i have fibromyalgia as well, so i am in a fair amount of pain on a daily basis and am so sick of it. but, if its just going to be a twinge or two each month i could handle that. thanks so much for your replies, ladies! i really appreciate them!

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy for adenomyosis: will adeno pain continue if ovaries are retained?

Once they remove the diseased uterus, that should help remove the pain, not that you can't have other things crop. The adeno makes the uterus sort of bleed inside the walls causing trapped blood and alot pain. Just watch what you do and take it easy. For some the recovery is smooth and for others it's harder. Jus so ya know, as everyone's walk is dift.

I had adenomyosis. I kept both ovaries. I have no adenomyosis type pains. Some months I will have a day or two of ovulation pain. But, it is definitely not the type of adenomyosis pain I used to get.... that pain was excruciating!

that is so good to hear! i think i have made my decision then. keep the ovaries for better heart health, unless they are not viable for some other reason. my doctor will be pleased. thanks for sharing, teresa

Your previous readings may have been in regard to endometriosis. Hysterectomy is not a cure for endo, and it can continue to grow once the uterus is removed. But adenomyosis is contained in the uterus, so a hysterectomy should solve issues with that pain.
