anemia questions

Has anyone found that they are having trouble healing sores?

Any skin issues? It seems like I am breaking out in blister like sores. It sounds more disgusting than it is. The best way I can describe is that the skin starts to itch, I rubbed the skin lightly and it came off! Like a small burn.

I know this is random, but the dermatologist says it's follicitis and my GYN said it looked like something else as well. (these are on my shins)

Re: anemia questions

Wow, I would listen to your dermatologist (they are the skin specialists and should know). Having said that, what you are describing (when you mention small blisters and like a burn) is like what my eczema looks a bit like (mine is usually small bumps and really red and itchy). I guess maybe your gyno thinks that's what it is? Personally, I would rather listen to the skin specialist as skin is their speciality!

As for me, I am having trouble healing sores (from scratching my eczema...yep, I'm naughty...I shouldn't scratch...but when I'm out of my cream I can't help it!)...I guess it's the lack of iron in my system.

Re: anemia questions

I've had issues with my skin since about the time I hit puberty. I have many many scars from scratching sores...i'm naughty too. I never once even considered there could be a connection between that & the anemia. Wow, it would be so awesome to finally have nice skin after so many years of being embarrassed. Something to pray for anyway

Re: anemia questions

Oh yes - I don't heal well and I have had open or semi open sores in the corner of my mouth for years.
Before I started taking 300 mg of iron daily the skin on my face started to feel like leather. Now it is soft again but itchy. My skin has always been on the sensitive side but now it is way worse. My gyno confirmed this is due to severe anemia.

Re: anemia questions

I've always thought of it like a heat rash, but come to thnk of it, that itchy red flaky skin is always worse while I'm on my period. I dont really think about it because except for short times I'm always on my period. But I got about a two month break and it almost cleared up and now I'm back on and itching. Trying not to scratch is hard.

I do find baby powder helps... At least in the short term.

I am sorry you guys are suffering from the itchiness too, but it is really comforting to hear your comments!

Re: anemia questions

Strange you should mention that because when I started becoming anemic due to long heavy bleeding I broke out in cold sores, which I have never had before. Also and I hate to admit this but toenail fungus, all of these things seemed strange as I had never had anything like them before. It must be that the immune system is down or something???
