Feel like I should tough it out
Im scheduled for surgery in Sept for lots of large fibroids that are giving me periods that control my life. Even still, I cant help but feel I should just tough it out until I go thru menopause. Im 48 and obviously that could be five years or five months. The surgery isnt trivial and the financial cost isnt either. And then there is the fear!

Re: Feel like I should tough it out
Pros of surgery:
Get control of your life back now instead of waiting an indeterminate amount of time, possibly years.
Cons of surgery:
A hysterectomy is major surgery...
and expensive...
and scary.
You're the only one who can determine where the balance lies for you. However, I'd suggest trying to discount the fear factor. The surgery we're talking about *is* a major one, but it's also a surgery that's routinely performed.
That said, it can have a major impact on your life, in either direction. I'd suggest that you shouldn't be having it unless you're sure that this is the way you want to go. For one thing, what alternative methods of treating fibroids have you considered? You might want to have a look at https://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/view_opt.htm

Re: Feel like I should tough it out
I understand how you feel. I am 50 years old. I am 8 weeks post op from a tah/bso. Like you, I suffered through periods that controlled my life. I also thought about toughing it out. I eventually had the surgery. It has been a blessing for 2 reasons. One is that my surgeon found endo cancer stage 1a grade1 which had not spread out of the uterus or to the lymph nodes. Since it was caught early, I won't need chemo or radiation. Secondly, my quality of life has improved immensely. I no longer have to worry about being near a bathroom at all times when I am out in public. I also no longer have to get out of bed 2 to 3 times at night to change tampons or pads. Good luck to you. I hope you make the decision that is best for you.

Re: Feel like I should tough it out
I would make sure that you are comfortable with doing this before going ahead. This surgery is pretty major and you can have problems after. You want to make sure that you have weighed all the options and decided this is the one for you. I was almost tempted to wait for menopause but after blood tests came back that I was not pre-menopausal I decided to go ahead. It could have been years before menopause and I was in a lot of pain. It really is up to you to decide what you want to do and what is best for you. Good luck.

Re: Feel like I should tough it out
Thank you all. I should be more clear. I have decided to have surgery. I have tried everything else over the last two years and I dont want to live with the pain and inconveniences....yeah thats the word... any longer. I just have that little voice in my head, probably coming from years ago, that somehow I am just being a wimp. I know I shouldbe kinder to myself, but you know how those old voices can be. I appreciate all your insights and stories. You help!

You can prove you're *not* a wimp by standing up to the little voice that says you *are*. Tell it you've had enough, you're moving forward and you're not listening to the garbage it spews anymore. :-)

Re: Feel like I should tough it out
yesIdo, I am new to all of this so cant offer much other than to say I understand what you are saying. I am 47 and think I have put up with this for 36 years, surely I can for another five! Truth is, things have been getting a lot worse, I have always had endometriosis but now that I have fibroids, things are so much worse and will probably get worse still. Personally I dont feel as though I am throwing in the towel in a whimpy kind of way, I see it as doing something wonderful for me and also my loved ones who are now being affected every month. Be kind to yourself.

Re: Feel like I should tough it out
Oh, I had my hysterectomy on July 1st and the reason was a large fibroid tumor. She made my belly poke out and I really didn't notice anything until I started running. I thought the frequent urination and heavy periods were just natural changes. I knew I had a fibroid, but my previous doc didn't think much of it. I'm not yet at the place where I can say whether it's better now that I've gotten it out. I'm still recovering with some aching. I will say this, and you know it already: this is major surgery. It drives me insane when people act like it's really no big deal. It's a huge deal and it hurts. I believe you'll know when you're ready for it. I hated the idea of surgery and was terrified, but when I was ready I said, "Get it out!!" I did have moments of doubt, but overall I knew it was the right decision. So go with your gut...as long as it's not because you think hysterectomy is some sort of sign of weakness! It's OK not to want to tough it out. Holy Moses, you deserve the best life you can get.

Re: Feel like I should tough it out
I totally understand where you are coming from. I had those same feelings too. Two weeks ago I had a SAH. They removed 2.5 lbs of fibroids (and of course my uterus...). Already I feel better. My incision still hurts a bit but my energy is so much better. I am feeling so glad that I went through with it. The worst part was the waiting.
