Fibroids & scared - help!

I am scared, also. My mom had a hysterectomy and I can't ask her about it because she passed away 8 years ago (unrelated). My sister and I both have fibroids. I'm 48 and never have had kids and figured it's probably too late now (I'm ok with that) I've always had (and still have, but super heavy) regular periods. I'm still waiting to see the OB/GYN. I'm also on medi-cal so some of these procedures may not be available.I don't know what some of this means, can you sisters help me, since my mom can't? Firm Uterus 218.9 Uterus is 11 x 22cm with marked enlargement by multiple fibroids, dominant fibroid in the lower uterus is 11cm. Endometrial thickness is 6 mm, but partially obscured. Right ovary non visualized, left appears normal. Cul de sac, normal. Thank you so much for any insight, I want to be informed when I go for my consultation.

Hi Ocean Swimmer:

I'm sorry to hear about your symptoms Perhaps there will be a non-surgical treatment option that will be effective for you. Here is a link to a list of our articles about Fibroids: CLICK HERE

Get smart about your symptoms and your options. Seek out a 2nd or 3rd medical opinion. I am sending huge cyberhugs

What are your symptoms other than heavy bleeding? What was the reason you had an ultrasound? An enlarged uterus is definitely a problem and uncomfortable, mine is13.3 x 7.1x 8.7cm. About 5 month preg. I feel bloated all the time I have multiple fibroids as well, my largest one is 7.2cm or just under 3 inches (large orange) and 4 others a little smaller than that that they measured, I'm sure I have others that they didn't measure. Your right ovary is probably blocked from view from a fibroid,I'm guessing, my left ovary is not visual. Endometrial thickness sounds normal, mine 5mm and ultrasound report says that is normal. I had a abdominal myomectomy in 2002 to remove a lot fibroids( but preserving the uterus) that I had then that caused me to have abnormal excessive bleeding. So the fibroids can be removed without having a hysterectomy. Lots of women have them and don't even now it until they cause problems and a lot has to do with where they are located. I have decided that this time I want a hysterectomy because they have grown back and are much larger, my uterus size, heavy heavy periods for so long now that I have become anemic. Doc says because of the size of uterus and fibroids and of possible scar tissue from abdominal surgery in 02 that I have to have an abdominal hysterectomy. I'm 47 and mine is scheduled for October 29. Sorry this was so long and I hope it helped a little. Good luck with everything and remember to get 2nd and 3rd opinions if you are not comfortable about anything your doc says.

Re: Fibroids & scared - help!

Thank you, that was very helpful. I was dating a retired surgeon who felt my stomach and knew right away I had fibroids. I was able to get a free ultrasound through a clinic here in Santa Barbara. I'm leaning towards a hysterectomy because I don't want them to come back and I don't think I'll be starting a family at 48 years old. I feel really uncomfortable and bloated all the time. I'm glad I came across this site. Take care and thanks for taking the time. Nicole
