Fear starting to set in a bit
Scheduled for surgery on Oct 11th. Was totally ok with all of this but lately my mind has been running on its own. I need to have a posterior repair done also and scared of how bad the pain will be from it. Scared that it wont heal right or fail. Scared about just having the hyster itself. A few years ago a young woman died after her hyster at a local hospital. Had a blood clot after surgery that broke loose. Scared that will happen to me. I know the likelihood of that happening is very slim but it still plays on the mind. I know I want this surgery to stop the pain and the bleeding and the anemia and hopefully get some energy back. but I can't stop my mind from wandering.

Re: Fear starting to set in a bit
I think that's normal. My surgery is Monday, & in a way, I'm excited to get it done & out of the way, but in a way, I'm scared. Not so much about blood clots & stuff, but what will I be like afterwards. I worry more about the emotional junk & wondering if my migraines will stop. I know of a woman who had the clot that broke loose, but there are so many others that I know who have done great. I figure life holds no guarantees, including no guarantee that I will get to work tomorrow without being in an accident. It's a chance I have to take, though.
I hope you can find a source of peace. If you have a pastor at church, talk to them for healing scripture. Talk to friends who are generous with hugs. Until you have that, here's a big <hug> for you.

Re: Fear starting to set in a bit
Glad you are here and know that you are not alone! It is normal to be anxious but all the stuff I worried myself silly over never even happened. The hardest part for me so far is feeling too good and not being able to do much so I tell you, those are the kind of problems to have! lol I know it's hard but try to relax and just know this too shall pass and you'll be over here on this side before you know it! I do wish you all the best!
Also, as far as the blood clots, they put something on my legs to keep that from happening so you might ask about your concerns so they can help put your mind at ease. And, I do recommend getting up and walking as soon as they let you and as often as you can. My dr. said short distance but often was better than just long distances. He kept saying up and down, up and down and I do think it really helped me be able to get around as good as I did as quick as I did.

Re: Fear starting to set in a bit
Hello ladies,
It is very normal to worry about your operation.
For me, it helped , to prepare practical things, such as: making food to put in the freezer. The first week i could not make any dinner, so i was very happy with it. Tip; make food that is not spicy, your testines won't like it after surgery.
Than you can also buy a lot of things (make e provision) which are havy to carry from supermarket(when you don't have a husband to carry it for you of course) ; such as; bottles of water, cat food, washing powder...than you don't have to bother somebody else to get it for you, the first weeks.
Make sure you have somebody to help you , especially in cleaning the house.
If you take care of these practical things, than you feel more prepared and less scary.
A lot of women went trough this operation and became much better after it, why won't you?
"Don't worry, be happy"
x Linda

Re: Fear starting to set in a bit
I know exactly how you feel. My surgery is October 12, one day after yours and I have begun to have all kinds of "what if" scenarios going thru my head. I had someone to tell me that all the worrying and anxiety will not determine the outcome, so just tell yourself that you're going on a trip to a place that you're looking forward to. Others I have talked to who have had this kind of surgery told me that I'll be just fine and will be so glad that I did it.
Hang in there and just try to think positive thoughts. This too shall pass

Re: Fear starting to set in a bit
I am so right with you sisters. I am frightened out of my wits like I have never been in my entire life ~ even through my daughter's birth when I found out she had Down Syndrome 17 years ago ...
I had PreOp yesterday and discussed that very same issue with my surgeon about blood clots and hemorraging OH MY. Weighing heavy on my mind. Yes, my good friend passed away (at the same hospital btw; although a reputable hospital for women in Boston) 2 years ago this October from CHILDBIRTH during a C-Section. It was horrible. She didn't even look like the same girl in the coffin. It has been incredibly traumatic for me - plus I had complications at my own child bearing years ago (many years ago) ... this is what the surgeon tells me: First, we will be in a CONTROLLED situation - and he did say I will have those massage booties on too! Guess it helps with blood clots and stuff. THEN, just like one of our sisters posted on this thread, he said I actually had a better chance of getting in a car accident on the way to the hospital and ... well, I think you get the general idea. This all helps, but I am still scared and will be until this is really over and I wake up and move on to recovering. Good Luck and I am so very sorry that we are so frightened. I wish there were more to say to help all of us but this is what my surgeon told me yesterday.

Re: Fear starting to set in a bit
Also MDA 2010 I will keep hearing your words ringing in my ears these next 24 hours. SO TRUE: All the worrying and anxiety in the world is not going to determine the outcome. And I will be using your relaxation technique ... I am off to a beautiful place where I've always wanted to go - once they put that medicine in my IV to put me out I hope I just visit for awhile and come back home soon.

We will all come through this looking back to wonder why we were all scared.

Re: Fear starting to set in a bit
I am there with you all too, my date is right after yours, 10/12. I'm in PA also eastern PA, are you close by there?
I just typed an explanation of how I deal with it, and after reading it back, it made NO SENSE!!! I deleted it, there is no way safe way to think about it, you just have to find what works for you and stay o this site to find support for what can't deal with.
Good Luck, you and I can go through our "count down" together.

Re: Fear starting to set in a bit
Your #1 job from now until surgery is to keep yourself as calm and positive as possible! Use every tactic you can think of! Funny movies, laughs with friends, hugs from loved ones, walks with doggies if you have them, spa time if possible and available, and a constant running track in your mind that says things like "I am so smart to be looking after myself like this!" and "Check ME out! Look out world when I'm on the other side!" etc etc!
I absolutely LOVED the leg cuffs they put on me, which basically massage you to keep optimum blood circulation while you are under anesthetic...and knowing what they were for made it even better for me (I lost a friend to a post-surgery blood clot, before they used the cuffs).
Feel proud! And hang in there!!!
