I was watching Dr. Oz concerns prolapse
I was watching Dr Oz he was talking about prolapse and that hysterectomy's are one of the causes. Has anyone had a problem with prolapse after a hysterectomy? And if so what was done?

Re: I was watching Dr. Oz concerns prolapse
I am 10 years post hysterectomy and no prolapse of anything in site.
My mom is over 20 years post hysterectomy and no prolapse in site for her though her bladder repair from that time may be causing a bit of an issue.
In general, when a doctor performs a hysterectomy, the surgery is done in a way to strengthen everything.
Some women are going to be more predisposed to prolapse. Some factors that can lead to prolapse include genetics, age, lifting heavy objects (weights, boxes), strenuous physical activity, obesity, vaginal births, and hormone issues.
If you have concerns about this topic, be sure to discuss them with your doctor and don't forget a second opinion.

Re: I was watching Dr. Oz concerns prolapse
I had the start if prolapse before surgery. I felt like there was a baby head between my kegs after a bm. That was my cervix falling.... I'm quite certain the root cause was my growing uterus. I had a TVH which removed my cervix do no worries about that. I had pretty much lisv bladder control before childbirth and afterwards it was shot forever! I had a bladder sling done 3 years ago. With my TVH I had a rectal hernia repaired. Those are very much related to vaginal birth.
When you have a TVH the tighten up the muscles. It's a very anti-prolapse procedure!

Huh. I'm having the surgery BECAUSE of prolapse! What kind of prolapse were they talking about, specifically? Bladder? Vaginal?
I understand your concern, though. Prolapse can be scary stuff. (((HUGS)))

Re: I was watching Dr. Oz concerns prolapse
I had heard similar things, but without reference to a study to back it up. Then I found this:
"Studies of over 16,616 women in the Women’s Health Initiative confirm that there is the exact same rate of prolapse of the bladder (32%) and the rectum (18%) in women with and without hysterectomy. Having children and obesity were the strongest risk factors to predict for prolapse. (Hendrix, AJOG, 2002) In fact, research also shows that weight loss is one of the most effective non-surgical remedies for urinary leakage of all types."
Made me feel better about the risk of prolapse.

Oh, and Dr. Oz is often full of ****. I have seen him make statements as fact that are still definitely theoretical and the subject of much professional debate. Definitely take anything he says with a grain of salt.

Re: I was watching Dr. Oz concerns prolapse
I've been thinking about how this surgery can really be an opportunity to take control of our health by doing things like exercising. It has been on my mind a lot, so I'll unload some of my thoughts.
Your dr wants you to get up and walk early and often. So take the opportunity to start some new habits that include walking first for recovery, then for fitness. And don't exercise to lose weight, do it to be healthy. Throw away the scale, forget the sit-ups, and think of exercise as making your bones stronger and your heart stronger. If you lose weight, great, but your goal should be pushing your heart, bones, blood vessels, respiratory system, etc. to get stronger, for a longer life. If you do this, I think you'll find that you do lose weight, but that you won't obsess over it. I've spent years watching my mother weight herself daily and fret over a pound gained or lost without ever mentioning her overall health.
I regularly exercise, but I hate every minute of it. I'm not one of those lucky people who get the endorphin high or whatever. But my father-in-law is a retired cardiologist and I've come to see fitness as having a different meaning than what my mother focused on. I think that my regular exercise has helped tremendously in my recovery, which has been pretty easy. Anyway, that has been on my mind lately and I'm excited about getting more fit than ever as I recover.
