Someone Help Please!!!

Hello ladies, ok I doubt I am the only one who is going through this so please tell me what to do. I am 5 days post op and today my body is finally telling me that I need to have a BM, but it is very difficult, and the pain about makes me pass out each time. My DH says my face goes extremely pale, I sweat and get dizzy and just about pass out. Is this pain normal? If so how long does it last before I can have a BM normally? I have been drinking plenty of water and gatorade and taking care of myself, I just dont understand this pain, it is worse then childbirth.

Yes I remember that pain, who would ever think going to the bathroom could be so painful! It does pass, mine lasted about 2 weeks. I was taking prescription colace and maxium gas x tablets. Helped but still painful,it is just your bowels readjusting from surgery. If you are having pain but can not go,call your dr,it could be complications. I used to call this pain baby heads! Because it felt like baby heads coming out the wrong place! Everyone knew when I yelled babyheads are coming to clear a path and leave me alone! I am having cuff repair surgery on 7/5 and I am getting prepared for the babyheads!

Did the dr. prescribe anything to help?

I know this is TMI but I had my hysterectomy the 19th and having a BM after surgery hurts very bad! My dr. prescribed colace/stool softner, and that helped make things softer to pass! Once things started working for me, I couldn't get them to stop, so I had to go off the colace.
I hope things start working soon and you can feel relief!

I do not know if this is your 1st BM, or if you've been taking stool softeners......

I didn't have a BM by my 5th day postop, despite fruit, lots of water, and stool softeners. I called my doc. In my case, a Fleets enema did it for me.........felt like the worst pain, ever....then, I didn't have any more problems after that.

Your doc needs to know about this. He/she may have a solution, and will definitely want to know. You should be able to get hold of your doc through the answering service, usually mentioned on the voice recording when you call the office, or the operator at the hospital he/she frequents.

I hope you get resolution, soon. You shouldn't have to endure that level of pain.............it could lead to a vasovagal response, making a person faint. Do not want to scare you........just am concerned about your color changing with the level of pain you are experiencing......................s.....Deb

Gatorade and water? Time to call in the heavy artillary. Have you tried Milk of Magnesia? Prune juice? Laxatives of any kind? My doctor gave me what she calls "The Recipe". Equal parts of oat bran (or wheat bran), prune juice and chunky applesauce. Stir it all together. I actually add cinnamon and alspice 'cause as hideous as the stuff looks, I think it actually tastes good! You have 1-2 TBS/day. You can make up enough to last a week by using 1 Cup of each ingredient and storing it in an airtight container in the fridge.

Good luck! Maybe call your doctor for some advice. It's an awful feeling, but just remember, "this too shall pass". HA!

I had the exact same feeling. My dr. recommended 1 correctol that evening, and if no results by morning to use fleets. Thankfully, the correctol worked. I took one more morning after the BM and things are back to normal. I am still taking 2 stool softeners daily (generic wal mart brand works fine for me)

Oh, I can relate...and sympathize....somewhere in the archives I read of that first bm being compared to giving birth to a toddler - and I couldn't agree more!!! I too went through the sweats, dizziness, etc. - it was awful...and I was desperate!
The dr. recommended a Fleet suppository which helped, but didn't quite do the trick. So I took MOM that evening, and by the following morning had success. I took Colace stool softener for awhile, until my bowels 'woke up' - hang in there - things will get better.

Someone Help Please!!!

I have been "going" since I came home two days after surgery.

I tried something that was recommended to me after my gall bladder surgery:

A milk shake or frappe!

I had my husband stop at our local ice cream stand and drank it on the way home. It works wonders and I have been fine ever since. The milk and ice cream work to get things moving!

I am 3 months post op. My first month or so, it felt as if I was trying to pass a watermelon!! I was taking 2 stool softeners a day and drinking tons of fluid. My stools were soft, but I still had that feeling.
I didn't have pain though, just the pressure. My doctor explained that the feeling was from everything being pushed around inside during surgery and your intestines and colon need time to get back to normal. If you have such pain though, you should talk to your doctor. Hang in there!
