So I have a UTI post hysterectomy...insult to injury.

So I went in to my doctors office on Tuesday to be checked for a UTI. They told me my urine was normal. And the nurse said the sensations I was having are common after hysterectomy. I have had burning, and urge to urinate, feeling of not emptying my bladder all the way. Normal? Ok, I thought. But it shouldn't be this bad, my gut instincts were telling me. Sure enough, they called today to tell me I do, in fact, have a UTI! And the nurse says today, it's common to come down with a urinary tract infection after this surgery, especially when a catheter was used.
I asked to be sent home from the hospital with antibiotics and was told no. Makes me mad because this could have been prevented. And this recovery is miserable enough without this. :-/
Ladies, if you're having bladder issues that don't feel quite right, get it checked out. Not all bladder sensations are normal.

Re: So I have a UTI...insult to injury.

I went and got a test for a uti and I had slight bacteria in the results?? What does that mean? So now I have to go and get 2 more urine test over the next 3 weeks to see if it is the beginning of one or the end of it. My doc doesn't like to write meds if he doesn't have to. Meanwhile I still gave pain. Sigh...I guess more cranberry juice..

They need to put you on antibiotics, especially if you have any pain or burning. Why would they wait so long? By that time it could reach your kidneys. I'd insist on antibiotics!

I haven't heard back from him yet on this second one. I will insist on antibiotics if this reading still has a little bacteria in it.

Re: So I have a UTI...insult to injury.

Good evening sisters! There are a couple of UTI threads tonight, for which I'm very sorry! Those are the worst.

It's hard to advocate and be insistent on medical care after surgery, but do give yourselves the gift of insisting on labs, cultures (and not just dipsticks), and antibiotics if you need them. Many docs of my acquaintance over the years, e.g., have put me on an antibiotic even if just the beginnings of a UTI are suspected. So keep on insisting.

Cranberry Juice, btw, does not help inflammatory conditions like Interstitial Cystitis and aggravates it instead.

Do check out the HS piece on

Bladder Spasms

And, otherwise, many women report bladder discomfort after this surgery, which does seem to traumatize our poor bladders (often related to the catheter). This can happen even with the best of surgeons. That said, it helps to drink plenty of water and choose bladder-friendly foods (avoiding caffeine—and not just coffee and tea but dark chocolate [sob], plus alcohol, citrus, vinegar, tomatoes, acidic/heavily processed/salty foods, carbonated beverages…. )

Please take care and
Sending you many
