Had pre-op today: good news/good news/bad news

Had my pre-op today. Got some really good news -

1. No bowel prep!!!
2. No staples!! My incision will be closed with disolving stitches done from the inside. The most I may see is the knot at the end of the incision IF it pokes out; if not I won't see anything and the skin will have substantially started to heal within 48 hours. Amazing!

Bad news is they found I have a heart murmur....now I have to rush an electrocardiogram (sp?) next week to make sure I don't have mitro-valve prolapse (sp?). If I do have it they say I will still have my surgery, I'll just need to start a course of antibiotics beforehand.

Anyone here have it? I know several people who do but don't think they've had major surgery....

Kim, I've had a heart murmur since birth. I do have MVP. Have to have antibiotics b4 any procedure including having my teeth cleaned at the dentist. It is better to find out now about it than find out after. If you have MVP and have any type of dental work or surgery and did not premed it can be very harmful. I have to take 5 ammoxicillan(sp) tablets b4 any work and thats it. It does not effect anything in my daily life. And taking the premed is just as easy as taking vitamins. Please do not be scared. I will keep you in my prayers that all will be well.

Thanks Lizzabee!
That makes me feel much better! I will find out Monday if I do have MVP. Big sigh of relief...other than the inconvenince of having to leave work for yet another appointment it sounds like I won't have anything to worry about.
Thanks for your reply!!
Kim

I have a heart murmur. I'm don't think mine is serious. I had an EKG during my pre-op. I didn't get any negative feedback from my EKG. I was given an antibiotic in my IV as a precaution.

Best wishes and 's

Kim, I have mitral valve prolapse too, and had my surgery last Wed. They just gave me antibiotics in my iv during my surgery and for awhile after that in the hospital. I didn't have to take them when I got home. I have to take them before dental procedures. It is not a big deal at all. The only thing you may have to watch out for is a yeast infection afterwards which I did develop. Not a big deal, they just gave me diflucan and it totally took care of it. You'll do just great. It is really nice to be on the other side of all of this. Emily

Just another quick tidbit. If you mention to your dentist that you were diagnosed with a murmur (even if you find out that you DO NOT have MVP) they will most likely request that you premed b4 any dental work.
It can't hurt anything, but just wanted you to know.

I've had a murmur all my life. No MVP. Last year my doctor heard it louder than she ever had (been with her for 18 years) and made me get a new EKG. No problems... just a loud heart I guess.

She had told me that if it was it wouldn't really affect my life much anyway... like you've been told, more antibiotics.

Thank you so much CessSecart, Emily, lo1369 and Lizzabee again for sharing. It is always so good to know you're not alone...now I'm at the point where I'm actually pretty happy to be having the EKG on Monday; if nothing else it will assure me that my heart is just fine. I will be visiting the dentist once I'm recovered from the hys so will remember to mention the murmur.
Thank you all so much!!

I have MVP also, it's a very, very common condition, especially in Women!, don't let it frighten you, it is not life threatening, but always take your antibiotics before surgery or dental work, this will prevent your heart from becoming infected, ......... the valve "snaps" (this is the murmur they are hearing) back slightly, allowing a little blood to leak back into the heart, thus, if bacteria from dental work or surgery get back into the heart, infection could occur, then it becomes serious.. The tech that did my echocardiogram also had it and said "A hang nail is worse than MVP!". My doctor has it, my friend's Son, another friend's Daughter, and her DH, my ex husband's son also has it.....really common!. Don't let that stress you!!! . BEST WISHES!

No MVP here but I do have heart problems. My doctor always gives me antibiotics to take before any surgery.
