Should I stop BC prior to surgery?

My doctor suggests all patients stop Bc pills 1 week prior to surgery to decrease blood clot risks. Has anyone ever heard of this before. I am due to have surgery this 23, Nov. I don't wan tot stop pills because endo is severely painful. Help!

I find your question personally interesting, because I haven't been on BC pills, but my doc put me on progesterone for the two weeks leading up to my surgery, and was very specific that I should take it the night before as well. This is to thin the lining of the uterus to enable her to do a better job with the hysteroscopy D&C. I suppose it depends on what's in your BC pills. Maybe it's the estrogen your doc especially wants to stop? I hope someone who knows something more about this will comment. I have a friend who teaches nursing whom I can ask too.

Just wanted to add, KLow, that with your surgery coming right up on Wednesday, I went ahead and emailed my nurse friend to see if I can get some word on this ASAP. I'll post as soon as she responds.

I took my last BC pill the day before my surgery, but that was ok'ed by my doctor. If your doctor wants you to stop then you should. Hopefully the pain won't be to bad.

I think you should do what your dr. request. I know the pain is hard but at the same time - thats why they are fixing it. Each dr. is different. I couldn't take anything for two weeks before my surg. You may want to call the nurse and have her ask him again - just to be sure! And let them know how bad you hurt without them. Maybe they can recommend something else for that short period of time.
