Now I'm freaking out
This site is so informative, but I have to admit it's scaring me a little bit., no let's be real- A lOT Scaring me. I'm scheduled for a TAH Tuesday, the 22nd. Everyone is saying how it takes 6 -8 weeks to recooperate. I guess I was fooling myself thinking I would be back teaching Ice skating in 2 weeks (i'm an ice dance coach). but 6-8 weeks, oh my!!!!!! I also run a business out of my home. I just can't be out that long. Can anyone give me some hope for a faster recovery.
I think I'm going to have a million questions before Tueday, please be patient with me, I'm sooo freaked out!!

healing happens in its own time frame
and I am reminding myself that no amount of self-will I try to exert over my rate of healing will change how long it takes.
I have to heal first. And in this particular case, everything but healing is secondary.
Sure, I would like to be back at it pronto, but accepting that I won't is what I have to work on today. Thinking of it as a temporary lay-off helps, even tho I am a homemaker.

Now I'm freaking out
Hi Gina,
Have you talked with your doctor about your recovery? Most doctors will not allow their hyst patients to return to work for at least 4 to 6 weeks, and maybe even 8, depending on the type of hyst that you are having, and whether you have any complications.
The following is copied from our post-op hints:

If you go back to work too early, it's very hard to convince your boss and coworkers that you came back too early and need to go home. It's better to take the full time and recover right the first time, then to have to try to repair the damage that overdoing it can cause.
If you go into work to just pick up your check or get your medical leave forms signed, everyone thinks you are back to work and wants something from you.
Believe everyone on Hystersisters when they tell you that it's a good 6-8 weeks for recovery. Don't allow yourself to believe that you can go shopping at the mall at 2 weeks or rollerblading at 6 weeks. Baby yourself as much as you can the first 2 months
Don't act too good too soon. Even if you feel good try to look lousy and weak. When you act better you automatically lose everyone's help and sympathy. Make it last because even though you feel better you still need the help. Don't find this out the hard way.
A corollary to the above: stay in your jammies, make-up free, or sweats, as long as you can.
Ten days post-op really is too soon to drive (two hours) a carful of kids to the midstate fair, just because you already paid for the tickets and Alicia Keys is performing. Twelve year olds have an amazing way of convincing you just how tough you can be and how cool you are for letting them stay out till midnight.

Please click onto the following link and read all of the post-op hints, so that you will be more prepared for what your recovery will be like., You have got only one chance to recover properly from your surgery, and I'm sure that you don't want to do anything to jeopardize your recovery.

Now I'm freaking out
Gina,
Not to add to your anxiety here, but I can't imagine lacing up a pair of ice skates and getting out on the ice 2 weeks after a TAH. Come to think of it, I can't imagine lacing up a pair of ice skates ever!!
Everyone is different as I'm sure you have noticed by reading the posts here. Recovery time is different for everyone. I would imagine that being an ice skater and a champion at that (I peeked at your bio) you are probably in good physical shape and that will definitely be to your advantage. But I wouldn't count on being back out there in 2 weeks.
Your body will tell you when it is ready and believe me it will tell you if you've done something you shouldn't have. You know your own body best but you need to be really really careful. The first 2 weeks you will have a lot of pain medication still in your system and it can fool you into thinking you feel better than you truly are.
Don't go back out on that ice without your s permission. He/she will know best what you went through with your surgery and will be your best advisor on the matter.
Good luck!!
Janet

Now I'm freaking out
Hi Gina
The one thing you don't know with this surgery is how quickly you're going to recover. It seems to me it's in the lap of the gods. I was quite convinced I would heal quickly (don't know why really....I guess because I was fit, exercised every day, slim, no other health problems etc. etc. and I just assumed I would be one of the quick healers (how incredibly arrogant of me). Turns out I was only about average. Have to just go with the flow I reckon and you'll get there when your body says so. Tell you what though, it does pay to listen to your body. It's your very best guide to healing as quickly as you can.
All the very best.

Now I'm freaking out
Just to add my 2 cents here - I had a tah/bso, and feel I had a very good recovery, but at 2 weeks, I still got very exhausted just from going out for dinner with friends and right back home. I was off work for the full 6 weeks (office job), and was fine, but still very tired at night. Our bodies really need this time to heal right!!

Now I'm freaking out
Dear Gina,
Don't be afraid to have this surgery. I know the thought of it is scary (all of us feel that way, preop),but it's a life=changing experience. I'm so glad I had mine done. My problems were much worse than I expected (or my doctor expected). As far as the healing time/process goes, don't rush it. Everyone heals at a different rate. The job you do requires alot of physical exertion,at times, so you really need to be physically fully recovered, and that takes time with this MAJOR SURGERY. Just give yourself a break, give yourself time to heal afterwards, don't rush it, and you'll heal quicker. Just listen to your body,to what it tells you when you do too much, etc. Write down a list of questions for your doctor, and ask s/he ahead of time, so you'll know what you're in for. I'm 3 months postop now, and feel so much better - no more periods, cramps, backpain, pelvic pain - yes. Feel so much better. It took me awhile, though. I work as a nurse (lpn) and am on my feet alot,so I was really sure before I returned to work, even though I had some help. At 7 wks., went back, was very tired at the end of each day - still get tired, but am so much better. Well, check in with us,let us know how you're doing. I'll be praying for you, thinking of you. God bless.

Realistic recovery time.............
I think it would fairer & more realistic if our doctors said it would be 3 - 6 MONTHS before we were REALLY feeling better!! Having your abdomen cut open is a rough thing to recover from. I'm at 3 months and still very sore & tender. While you are in MUCH better shape than me , you must allow your body to heal!!!! Such an active sport has got to be a strain on your abdominal muscles & those are JUST the ones that need to heal & be treated tenderly. Hoping you have a good castle time & an uneventful recovery!! Stick with the Sisters here, I would have been SUNK without them!!!

Back on the ice in 2 weeks?
Hi,
I'm a teacher and don't know much about ice skating, but we're alike in that I too, asked the ladies if anyone went back to work at 2 weeks because I was planning on it. (The overwhelming majority convinced me this was not a good idea.) As it turns out, I was in the hospital for 9 days instead of the usual 2-3, so the 2-week (too weak) deadline was REALLY not possible. Besides, my employer required a release to go back to work at 6 weeks...don't know how that will work in your profession.
I really hope you can work out something so that you can take at least 4 weeks to recover. Some here say that their doctor will release them at 4 weeks. Not mine! There is just no way to predict how you will heal, so I'm glad I was ordered to take the full 6 weeks, even though I could have reasonably gone back at 4 or 5 weeks. Not to freak you out further, but I would worry, too, about a possible fall on the ice. I was weak and dizzy when I stood too long or got up too fast at 2 -3 weeks, so I really had to watch my step going down hills around our place and on our stairs.
One thing I was able to do at 2 weeks was to sit for about 1 hour at a time typing on the computer and consult over the phone and participate in short meetings. So maybe your home business can continue that soon...not sure how that works for you.
Best wishes to you for a speedy recovery!
Terry

Recovery
Gina,
Welcome to the most wonderful website around!!! I read your bio...I miss the ice alot living down here in SC....my DS's played ice hockey for 11 years before we moved down here....it was truly a way of life....
I haven't had my surgery yet but have read so much on this site from the others.....We only get one chance at recovery from these surgeries....Things could go terribly wrong if we do not allow ourselves to heal completely......My DH will be home with me the first week and my sister from NY is flying in for my second week to make sure I am a good princess and behave....I was very bad after knee surgery and used the stairs and did laundry in the basement two days after....not one to sit or let anyone else do my chores....But that shall change....very soon....
Take the time to read the threads and become part of this wonderful supportive group....
Here is a big and well wishes for your surgery...
Lilly
