Hypothyroidism diagnosis

Hi Sisters!

I am almost four weeks out and was feeling pretty dang good. After my surgery I found out I had adenomyosis, endometriosis, and lots of fibroids. The doc took everything but my two ovaries.

Now, I just got a call from my gyn nurse that said I have clinical hypothroidism. I knew my original blood test was borderline, and I just had the bloodwork redone several days ago. I really don't have any of the symptoms that I have researched online, except for the inability to lose weight. I was told to follow up with my general doc. I have an appointment with a regular nurse practioner, because it will be at least two months until I could see my regular doc. I don't have much confidence with the nurse, but it is a place to start.

Have any of you had any experiences with this or words of wisdom? Mentally and physically I was doing so well. Now I feel I have been socked in the gut! I am so sick of doctors, and I just want to be normal!

Thanks, Lilly

Re: Hypothyroidism diagnosis

I too am hypothyroid, was diagnosed probably 10 or so years ago. I didn't really feel a ton of symptoms either, but after being on thyroid meds for awhile, I could tell some things had gotten better.

It takes a little while for the doctors to regulate your thyroid levels so don't get too discouraged. They'll put you on a dose of thyroid replacement and then do periodic bloodtests to make sure you are on the correct dose. One thing I'll mention that seems important - if you are put on synthroid make sure the prescription says "brand name medically necessary." There are lots of generics for synthroid, but our bodies are sensitive enough that the generics can cause troubles so most doctors I've worked with have all said to keep with the name brand.

Good luck, I hope your doctors appt goes well and getting this under control is much easier than the girl troubles that bring us all here!

Re: Hypothyroidism diagnosis

Hi Lilly, hypothroidism is common in women as we age. Perhaps from all the bad dieting we've done in our lives and partially due to hormone changes, many of us get it. You should be feeling lucky that you were not having more of the symptoms, that it was caught early!

I was having lots of symptoms, including memory challenges, extreme dry skin and inability to lose weight- I truly thought I was losing my mind! I had joined a gym, signed up for personal training and gained weight. I then saw an Oprah Show about her weight challenges (caused by her thyroid) that got me to take some action- I did some online research, tracked my symptoms and made a visit to my MD. And to think it is simple to control- taking one small pill every morning. I only wish I would have taken action sooner!

Try not to take this diagnosis so hard. I look at the medical challenges I'm having as my mid-life tune-up. And not unlike when a car's warranty runs out, there always seems to be something. And if I can feel better then I was feeling I look at it as success. We can't turn back the hands of time, we can only keep them from speeding up.

Good luck!
