Tips on Clear Liquid Diet Before Surgery?

Hi Ladies,

My surgery is Sept 11th, and I have to say again that you Sisters have been a tremendous support.

I am incredibly nervous, but being able to come here has helped so much!

I am having a LAVH, and my doctor wants me to have a clear liquid diet the day prior to surgery. I'm just wondering what those of you had to do the same ate? I stocked up on jello, chicken broth, decaf tea, grape juice, popsicles and gatorade. She said nothing red, however.

Also, I was wondering about bowel prep. I have to take 1 capful of miralax every 2 hours mixed with 8 oz of gatorade beginning 48 hours before surgery. My doctor said that this is much easier on the system than a lot of bowel preps. Anyone do this?

Thanks so much,
Cindy

Really? Eww I think I want to just get mine over and done with. Don't think I could go 48 hours with only a liquid diet, I love food to darn much!

Liquid diet just the day before, but the miralax starting two days before... But, I suppose with the miralax, I should go easy on my diet anyway! I'll be so glad when it is Friday, and the surgery is over!!!!!

The miralax is a lot better...I had to drink the Fleets one and then do enemas! As for the CL Diet...I honestly felt so sick from the bowel prep, I didn't want to eat. Though I got popsicles (no red or purple they said), chicken broth, and my soda...that's all she wrote. It's really not as bad once you get going on it.

Drink plenty of water before and after your surgery. Being dehydrated can cause problems in the hospital. Just one example, for people who are dehydrated they can have a horrible time having an IV put in, due to how dehydration affects the veins.
I cannot relate to you with the bowel prep, because I did not have to do one.

Good Luck and a speedy recovery!

It does help to eat light a couple of days prior to the prep. I had a colonoscopy the day before my hysterectomy so I was on a CL diet for a couple of days. I did the pills and they weren't bad at all. I'll do them again if the need arises.
