Hi NickyNina,
Welcome to Hyster Sisters.
Being stressed out is perfectly normal. Having surgery can be scary. However, I found that the waiting was the hardest part, and that my imagination kind of got away with me and it wasn't nearly as bad as I was afraid it would be.
In regards to the pain, yes, there is some pain, but it's not unbearable in most cases, and the doctors are very good at managing it with medications. On a scale of 1 to 10, my pain never got above a 3 or 4 at most. (Click the WWW button below my post to read my bio, surgery, and recovery stories.)
Read all that you can here and learn all that you can. The more knowledge you have, the better prepared you will, and the less fear you will have.
And feel free to post any questions or concerns you may have. We're here for you whenever you need us.
Best wishes and lots and lots of s,
Lisa

Seriously Stressed
It is completely normal to be afraid because you've never been through this before. As Shashi said, they do a good job with pain management, which helps you recover. The only time I had real pain was when I woke up after surgery. They gave me pain relief twice in the recovery room because I said the pain was high. Later in my room, I pressed the PCA machine whenever in pain. The next day my pain barely measured a 1. Don't be afraid of pain relief and take what's prescribed. You won't get addicted. I had an easy recovery.

I'm right there with you!
I can totally relate to your stressful feelings. I am having a TVH on the 20th. That's four days from now! Yikes! Having just moved to Mississippi about a week and a half ago, and only meeting my oncologist/surgeon once, that made me even more nervous. But he is very nice, and compassionate as well. As for your question about pain, I'm positive that it will be less than comfortable for a little while, but just like the other post says, waiting is the worst! I'll be thinking of you. Good luck to you!

Waiting really is the hardest part
NickyNina,
I just had my TAH/BSO on August 6 (less than two weeks ago). I did not find it overly painful in the hospital - used morphine pump and then received oral meds on second day. I've only used the pain killers at home at night (I'm a belly sleeper and find this will be impossible for a while). Waiting really is the hardest part. Post-op is a push over compared to waiting.
s,
Laura

Pain
Hi NickyNina,
I am almost 8 week post op and honestly it wasnt the worst pain I have ever had. I had never had surgery before, except for tonsils 30 years ago. I was making myself a nervous wreck over the surgery. As the date drew nearer I told myself I had 2 choices: do it, or not do it. There was no middle ground on this. I was tired of painful, heavy periods, back aches, this huge lump in my stomach, etc etc. In order to get past all that - I HAD to have this done. Once I accepted that fact, I found some sort of peace with it. The worst part of it all, for me, was the first time out of that hospital bed. There is pain, it's not the worst pain you will ever feel, and the drugs help immensly with this. Try to just think of all the good stuff. You get to sit on the couch for at least 2 week with people waiting on you. You CANT clean house (darn!), you cant drive (darn!) you cant do lots of stuff. But you can do lots of stuff too, call an old friend, watch a movie you've been wanting to watch, organize your recipes, photos, etc etc., read. The best part of this for me though was just being able to chill out for 6 weeks. I loved being home and spending time with my husband, kids, house and garden. If I had it to do over again, I most definately would. And the kicker? NO MORE PERIODS - EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

waiting is the worst
Again, I agree with everyone else. The waiting is the hardest. It will be over before you know it. I agree the pain, though bad at times was never totally unbearable. My only concern is that I had my TAH on 8/5 and even though I told the a-man, the nurse, the dr. All that I am prone to be nauseous and was assured that they would put "something" in the iv was as soon as I woke up from surgery all that day and the next. Which I really think made the whole healing process worse. So .... Make sure if you have had a tendency to get nauseous that they understand. That was the worst. Good Luck! Lady Violets

I have to agree
that the waiting is the worst. I just had my TVH 2 days ago & although I am a little sore, getting off the couch is slow & hard, I really feel just wrung out, exhausted. I just took a two hour nap & a shower now I am eating lunch & I'll probably take another nap. But that is what good princess are supposed to do. I am trying to drink alot because I feel so bloated, in the past 2 days I gained 6 lbs from the IV fluids during surgery....they have alot of salt in them. So I will drink alot to try and get rid of all this extra fluid I am carrying around. Talk about water weight LOL!!

I Agree--Waiting is the Worst--So Is The Cookie Tossing
Waiting time gives you time to go "what if" over and over and it just seems to drag on and on. Sorry about the ing. I told the "a" doctor that I am notorious for ing after anesthesia and have an eroded esophagus and bad hiatal hernia and more than a couple will lead to bleeding, etc. I am proud to report I didn't after surgery because they took me so seriously they put in a naso-gastric tube! Had anyone told me ahead of time they'd do that, I'd have been in a total panic; actually, I couldn't feel it at all and before I could really brace myself for its removal, it was out. No nausea, etc. But that waiting--we all go through it I know and it's an emotional time.
