no sit ups????

It's been 4 months since my abdominal hysterectomy.

When I saw my doctor, I was 8 weeks post op and he said I could only do tiny exercises like half crunches etc...

Now though, i feel ready to move on to a little more active exercising and i do NEED to lose that fat belly!

I went on the net to read a little bit about exercising suggestions, and all I could find was to NOT do sit ups and a thousand other ab exercises because they are not good for your pelvic floor and if you want to avoid prolapse , you need to not do them!!!

Yet another dissappointment! Now even on this site, the exercises mentioned are sort of sit ups!

is there a book, a web site, anything that gives me good ab exercises that I actually CAN do???

What are your routines 4 months post op?

Re: no sit ups????

There seems to be "some" exercises aloud, but no one mentions them or I am too useless to find them haha

All I know (read) is that "most" ab workouts are hard on your pelvic floor, which us who have had uterus removal really dont need.

I am really getting angry here, cause I was really counting on doing some boot camp treatment on my abs.

Please anyone?

Grrrrrrr

Re: no sit ups????

I was also planning on doing a lot of stomach workouts also. Oh no if this is true this will put a huge burden lol. Looks like tummy tucks and lipo in my future. I wish no money :-(

Re: no sit ups????

What?! Wow, that'll be disappointing news... Going to check with my surgeon to get her take - all she said was no strenuous exercise for 6 weeks. I was counting on some kick-hiney pilates and such once I was cleared. I (and my tubby tummy) will cry if this is true!

Re: no sit ups????

Surgeons dont tell you these things, I dont even know if they care or care to know...

My syrgeon told me to do crunches, while apparently, it is one of the first ones NOT to do...

I just found a book that apparently tells you what to do, (not only what NOT to do)...

I just wish there were DVDs on this... Like "post hysterectomy boot camp"!!

Re: no sit ups????

THis is a video where she explains pretty well what we should NOT do, and gives examples of what we can do... We are far from boot camp here...

Re: no sit ups????

I just watch more of it.. it's good at explaining what NOT do to, but nothing much here beyond holding the muscles in...

Re: no sit ups????

I don't know if you have such a thing in Canada, (I am in Australia) but I went to a sports physiotherapist prior to my surgery to get some information about what I could or could not do post surgery. She actually looked at my pelvic floor using ultrasound prior to the surgery and said that it was good and should be ok as I had no previous issues, and to come back after the six week check and she will have another look.
I know there are also specialist physiotherapists in Australia that deal with stress incontinence which is basically a pelvic floor issue as well. Do you have such a thing in Canada? They could probably advise you.
I have also tried finding diagrams of the pelvic floor on the internet and to be quite honest, I do not see that a hysterectomy should actually affect it. I think more important is to do pelvic floor exercises and not to get constipated and strain during bowel movements.
By the way, the real way to get rid of belly fat is to do aerobic exercise!

Re: no sit ups????

This is the sort of thing I've been wondering about, too!!
I used to do a lot of "floor" exercises, mainly for my back, but they are probably not good for my abdomen. Must watch the video.

The thing is - is that belly fat or the swelly belly?

The more active I am - in a general way - the more I swell up, so that's another dilemma. Is that bad or OK?
