Breathing tube troubles from anestesia??

Hello,

I have had a BAD experience from a prior surgery- when I was put under and a breathing tube was inserted. While in surgery, the tube cut the front of my uvula. (the little dangly thing in your mouth)

After I woke, I was told it was normal to have a dry sore throat, but this was worse! I ended up with a terrible infection, and had to got to a Ear Nose and Throat doctor several times before it finally cleared up. (weeks later) I still have a tiny white scar that you can se when I open my mouth.

The ENT doc told me that the next time I have surgery, ask to have a child size breathing tube instead of the larger one. So, I guess my point here is- has anyone had trouble after their hysterectomy due to complications froma breathing tube???

Sounds kind of weird, but I am very scared of that happening to me again. It's a lot more painful than it sounds.

Thanks for listening!!!

Jennifer

Breathing tube troubles from anestesia??

Hi,

Sorry you had this trouble with the breathing tube. I hope you are feeling better now.

If you click on Search at the top of the page and type in breathing tube you will see several threads that talk about this. I didn't really realize that this could be a problem until I read these.

Thanks for making us aware of it and at least we can talk to our anethesiologists beforehand and ask questions, and mention our concerns so they can be careful with us.

Take care and how all goes well in your recovery.

Breathing tube troubles from anestesia??

Hey Jennifer, Thank God I've always had no problems with intubation. I know that lots of people do though. Please make sure you tell EVERYONE that preps you, preoperatively that you have had a problem with prior intubation. I would tell the nurse who preps me and I would tell the Ansthest. as well. sometimes (as scary as this may sound) medical and paramedic students 'practice' intubation on surgical patients (they all have to learn somehow), If you tell the Doc prior to going in that youv'e had problems in the past, then hopefully you will be treated with kid gloves, and if there is someone especially savvy in the skill of intubation they will be obtained so that they may 'tube' you with the least trauma possible. God bless you, Try not to be too scared. I will pray that this surgical experience will be a much less traumatic one than your last.
