Frazzled!

I am scheduled for TAH on 4/29 and my nerves have gone haywire. I had been on Zoloft for 12 mos. and quit taking it several weeks ago as I was having a D&C and did not want to be taking it during all that. Now I am scheduled for my TAH and I have lost control of my emotions. I am so edgy and angry. I don't know whether this is b/c of not taking zoloft or whether or not it has to do with underlying anxiety about the surgery. Can anyone relate???

You BET I can relate! I actually increased my Prozac before my surgery. It kicked in afterwards, I think. I was taking such a low dose that it probably needed to be increased, anyway.

Did you Dr. tel you that Zoloft could interfere with your surgery? Some of those medications have no effect. Why not take it unless it would be bad for you?

In fact, call you Dr. and see if they can give you something for the anxiety. They gave me a little bit of Xanax for a few days beforehand, and it seemed to help.

I was shocked, though, when my anesthesiologist called me the night before and told me to go ahead and take two xanax, along with a glass of wine. I thought we should never mix that stuff! Besides, I don't drink. And drinking before you go in for surgery? I don't know about that.

But DO ask your doctor and take something to help ease your nerves a bit beforehand. It won't do you much good to be all wound up, although it is hard to avoid it.

thanks for replying. i took prozac for a three mos. but was allergic to it. I developed horrible hives. I felt so much better on it than zoloft. I really did not think zoloft was making that much of a difference in my life. But maybe it did! How has your post-op been and have you reduced your med since surgery?

Was there a reason for going off your zoloft? I have been on Celexa for a couple years and I took it during the surgery and my DR told me not to quit. It takes so long for your body to get a build up of the med that you shouldn't go off unless it will interfer with your surgery. I would call my DR and see if you can start your Zoloft again. I had panic attacks and I started having them again right after my surgery and my DR had them put my patch on and they went away. I was still taking my celexa. In fact I took mine to the hospital with me. My DR told me to take mine so I did and didn't have to pay an arm and leg for one from their pharmacy ..God Bless and call that DR.

Yikes! go off anti-depressants and tranquilizers!?! I'd be vomiting in terror! I'm on Celexa, Clonazepam and Epival to prevent migraines. Being nervous requires so much more energy just to deal with nerves, I have no strength to deal with work and housework. I've discussed it with my Dr, and he said too the more comfortable you are emotionally, the better you're going to heal. That's what prayer and friendship and therapy is all about, but sometimes its not enough.

Take care of yourself, and if the drugs help for now, take 'em.
