surgical menopause vs nature
I apologize if this has been discussed prior, but is there a difference between the sudden onset of menopause as a result of a BSO and menopause entered into as nature intended? I had my LSH/BSO on 4/15 and experienced the first hot flashes the second night in the hospital. I am unable to receive any HRT or other tx that may mimic my hormones. When I speak of what I am experiencing to my family members, the response I receive is that I was going to go thru menopause one way or another. It just seems to me that when you are suddenly launched into menopause, the affects can be a bit of a shock - perhaps the same way that being induced for labor is often more intense?
I know that menopause varies for everyone so it can be hard to compare. Just wondering what others thoughts are.

surgical menopause vs nature
I had a TVH and everything out on 3/22/05.
I am 53 and was already having hot flashes and night sweats for about 8 years...peri menopause...as I still had periods...horrible ones! I was told that from the pathology I would probably have had periods for another 2-5 years! I am sooo glad that isn't gonna happen now!
To be honest...I think my flashes and night sweats are actually shorter in length now...than they were prior to surgery. Before surgery they were about 20 - 30 minutes long...now they are about 10 minutes long.
But then I did have something to compare all this to. Since you didn't... they probably seem overwhelming to you...
Hang in there

Seagate:
I was years away from peri-menopause when I had a TAH/BSO in 2/2004. My onc. said that post surgery that the symptoms may be more pronounced because of the very rapid reduction in estrogen. I did experience hot flashes while in the hospital but I do not know if they were related to menopause or an illness I developed post op, but shortly after I was out of the hospital I have not experienced any symptoms. Please note that I am on the anti-depressant Effexor and my gyn-onoc says the typical "...Every woman is different..." I just feel very luck at this point. From your signature line it looks like you have been through alot and I wish you a speedy and full recovery.

My doctor told me that surgical memopause would be more drastic than just going through it naturally, because when you go through menopause naturally, there is somewhat of a steady decline in hormone function as opposed to sudden onset with hysterectomy/surgical menopause. Of course, every woman is different and menopause is menopause, no matter how you go through it.

I was about 1/2 way through menapause which usually lasts an average of 7 years when I had to have a TAH. Been through the nightsweats and the Hotflashes (and the hormonal changes) et al.
It's been six weeks now since TAH and I have to say I am having more hotflashes/night sweats. The only difference is that they're not as intense and don't last as long. So I guess that's a good thing!
I recommend Susan Weeds book "The Menapausal Years". It's a really good book from women who have gone through the change.
As for me, I have to say
I haven't killed anybody yet.

I think that the "surgical menopause" that I was thrown headlong into might actually not last as long as the "natural" way, but I do think that it can be more intense! My sister has been suffering from menopausal symptoms (wild mood swings, hot flashes, sweats, dry skin, etc ) for going on 4 years and still counting! My dr said that I may have these symptoms for maybe 2 years... I suspect that women who haven't had their ovaries yanked out deal with "yo-yo" hormones over a period of time, while we go "cold turkey". I guess I'll take the "cold turkey" (as if I really have a choice!)

When I had my hyst. my hormone patch was put on that same day, so I havent had too much trouble. I did have a few night sweats the first week or so I was home from the hospital. I wonder how menopause will be when I decide to stop with the patches. I dont know that I want to be on hormones for too much of an extended about of time. Mainly because of some of the risk factors associated with them.
dlhavard ......... I had to laugh at your statement about "I havent killed anybody yet." One of my friends moms said she had days when she felt like she could. She said she had days where she was just daring someone to com up to her desk at work, lol!!!!

just at my GYN, today. From my 2nd. week post-op have had the chills and night sweats. Nothing thru the day so far. I'm so thankful for that. But we decided aganist HRT for now. I told her I had bought promensil , and she knew of it. Thank god for that. She told me it was fine to take it. It's all natural. The only thing is it can take awhile for it to kick in.
Also I learned today that a women can have these from 2 years too 7 years. Oh said oh my I hope I'm not one of them, and I hope this promensil, will work for me.
I left 1 ovary, thinking I would have none of these effects. Oh how I was wrong, and of course they don't bother to tell you that this could happen.

Thanks so much for all the input. Sounds like there are many different experiences. I'd like to hope that maybe surgical menopause will be shorter in duration. This would be one of the first pluses I can think of for having had this surgery.
I use a heating pad when resting to aleviate my chest pain. Too bad I can direct all the heat generated from my hot flashes to where my chest hurts. Some times I feel like a walking heating pad!

Seagate, Have you thought about taking an Herbal for the hot flashes? You might be aloud to do that. I would ask my Dr. first.
