Cervix Removal
Hello!
Can anyone give me information on the removal of the cervix. My Dr. did not say anything about it, but I read that it is standard to remove it in the US. Should I anticipate any sexual problems after?
Also, what is the occurence of having to go back in later to remove the ovaries?
Thanks for the support!

Cervix Removal
Hi there! Whether or not to keep your cervix is a difficult question to answer, each of us has to make a decision that's best for ourselves, but I can give you some things to think about. Discuss these things with your doctor, and between the two of you, you can make the best decision for YOU.
1. Cancer. Is there any history of cancer in your family? Removing the cervix drastically lowers your chances of cervical cancer (still a remote possibility due to the chance of some cells being left behind)
2. Bleeding. Some women who keep their cervix end up having "mini-periods" monthly (only if they also have at least one ovary). These seem to be rare, and are very light, but are a possibility.
3. Sex. There are many conflicting opinions on whether the cervix contributes to sexual pleasure. Ask 10 people, you'll get 10 different answers. I can say in MY case, at least, sex is wonderful after the surgery (I had my cervix removed). My doctor told me it wouldn't make a difference, and in my case at least, she was right - neither myself nor my husband can tell any difference.
Keep reading, talk to your doctor, and good luck with your decision!
As far as ovaries, I don't know much about that, because I was able to keep mine with no complications.
FYI, I had my cervix removed, and have had no difficulties with sex at all!

Cervix Removal
Keeping or removing the cervix is a hot topic. I would recommend discussing it further with your DR, unless you are having a vaginal hyst, in which case the cervix has to go, since the uterus is being removed through it which essentially destroys it.
My own DR told me that the cervix is not a separate organ, it is basically just the opening to the uterus. It is the size of a coat button and after the uterus is removed it no longer has any function. The bladder has its own ligaments for support, and the uterine ligaments are reattached to the top of the vagina to hold it in place.
As far as sex is concerned, I haven't noticed any difference without it.
The ovaries: I had mine removed at the same time, based on family history and I also had numerous painful cysts on both ovaries over the years. My sister first had one ovary removed, then 2 years later had a hyst leaving the other ovary. 3 years after the hyst she had to have surgery again to remove the remaining ovary.
Best wishes!

Cervix Removal
Hi Bot
It is standard practice in the UK to remove the cervix also. I asked my Dr if I could keep mine - he said of course I could but why would I want to.
I replied with 'I am only 34 and want to have a good sex life' He told me that there was absolutely no proof that removing your cervix would affect your ability to orgasm. My husband was laughing at this - apparently he was thinking that only me could be thinking about sex at a time like that!
Anyway, I am undecided, but my Doc did say that my insides are such a mess I may not have the choice.
Ah well - they can have all the lot if it makes the pain go away.
Keep smiling... lots of love from England.

Cervix Removal
I was supposed to have my cervix removed with everything else, but Dr said that my pelvis was unusually deep and he couldn't get to it and guarantee a good vaginal cuff, so he left it alone. I think God must have an awesome sense of humor, because I'm a short, squatty thing and to think I have a long neck, but it's just not where I can see it.....cracks me up.
blessings,
Mary

ha..ha...who knew that
something as small as ones cervix could cause such a controversy???
I am going to have my cervix removed, due to my uterus being entangled in it...the dr. thinks he could save it, but Im thinking...why???just cut it out...it does nothing for me!! ha...ha..
snort!!
Anyway...
If you are in a loving relationship you are apt to enjoy 'relations' (going to Auburn we call it here in my house...wink..wink..) if you experience problems w/ getting the 'big O' thats a small price to pay to avoid having the big C>>cancer....
but thats just my opinion...
I would willingly let them cut anything out I guess...ha...ha...Im just so tired of pain that I want it over with...
go with a prayer in your heart, I believe that God will not lead you wrong...
spend time in meditation...I believe that what is best for you will come to you...
(((hugs))) and best of luck..

You will get conflicting responses on this question; it's a "hot topic".
I did a LOT of reading when I was making my decision. I opted to keep my cervix, and had a Supracervical abdominal hysterectomy.
1) There is no history of cervical cancer in my family;
2) I didn't want to worry about potential problems with the vaginal cuff, either in terms of internal support or healing;
3) I have vaginal orgasims and wanted minimal disruptions of vaginal nerve pathways, etc.
I'm now 11 weeks post-op, and am very happy with the choice I made.
I think you should read everything you can about your options(explore the internet too), and then make the decision that's right for YOU.
