clean out?

I went for my pre op today. After the lab and history they handed me my prep kit. Only pills. I asked was I suppose to take something to clean out and they said no. They said it is not something they do much of anymore. Has anyone had their hyster and not gone through some sort of enema or something?
Thanks.

I had my surgery on 1/19 and I expected to have to do some kind of bowel prep and to my delight I didn't have to do anything. I looked at like one less thing to worry about. Best of luck on your surgery and I wish you a speedy recovery!

Wow, must be nice. My pre op will include clear liquids for 24 hours and an enema. Talk about adding insult to injury!

clean out?

My pre-op was drinking a bottle of magnesium citrate, the day before, that I bought at Walmart and a fleet enema before I went to bed. The pre-op nurse told me it would reduce cramping the day after surgery. Everything was so swollen, if I was cramping it was just part of the pain. I think it helped with not having to worry about having a bm the next day. It hurt to empty anything when I did so I guess it was good for me.

Only do what you were specifically told to do. If you weren't told to do any bowel prep, then don't. If you weren't told to eat differently, then don't.

Each DR and hospital has different procedures and preferences and it is extremely important to follow those procedures. To do otherwise can put you at risk for complications.

Bowel preps are dehydrating to the sytem. If you do an unordered bowel prep you could go into dehydration shock during surgery. If your DR told you to do the bowel prep they are prepared to give you extra fluids during surgery, if s/he didn't tell you they aren't expecting you to need extra fluids.

The day before, unless you have been given special dietary instructions, eat a healthy, normal diet. It will probably be more than 24 hours before you get to eat again, and quite often it's a liquid diet for a day or so. Your body needs the nourishment before surgery.

Best wishes!

clean out?

As my pre-op is not until the day before surgery...I called and asked about bowel prep. I was told there was none required, that they have not been doing that for some time. When I offered, she said it was not necessary. I am still planning on having a clear diet the day before. I have been taking Metamucil for several weeks as constipation has become a problem in the last 8 weeks. She suggested not using that the day before. Leslie
