Air Travel after abdominal hysterectomy
Hi,
I am having surgery on 9/23/16. Abdominal partial hysterectomy. My mother informed me this past Tuesday that she has been diagnosed with Endometrial cancer. I want to go see her while I recover and be with her. It will require air travel, two short flights. one 1.5 hours and one 2.5 hours. My Dr said I could go two weeks after surgery and that is my plan as I will be off work for 6 weeks, My Aunt is coming to help me and travel back with me as well. I plan on staying with my mum for three weeks and recover there, spending time with her is very important to me, I am concerned about the blot clotting issues I have read. I will take all precautions necessary. Water, walking, compression socks ect.. I am very emotional right now with everything going. I am looking for some sound advice and past experiences with air travel after this procedure.
Thank you.

Re: Travel after abdominal hysterectomy
I had a TAH/BSO for endometrial cancer. As regards your mother, be aware that this cancer is symptomatic in the early stages and thus is usually caught early. It's also known for being slow to spread. As a result, often a hysterectomy is the only treatment needed to cure it. There's every chance that this will be the case for your mother.
As regards your trip, I don't have any experience with air travel after surgery. However, you'll need to give a thought to your luggage. It's normal to have a weight restriction of 10 lbs or so for the first 4-6 weeks after surgery. This applies to pushing and pulling as well as to lifting. Putting your suitcase on a cart and pushing the cart isn't going to work.
In my case, I was limited to 10 lbs the first four weeks after surgery, then 30 lbs for the next two weeks. If you're flying out with your aunt at two weeks and then coming back on your own at five weeks, it's likely that you'll still have restrictions for your trip back.

Re: Travel after abdominal hysterectomy
Hi blindlady77 to HysterSisters!
First, I am so sorry about your mum's diagnosis.
I do not have any experience with air travel that close to my surgery. I did travel about 7 months after my surgery for a dear friend's funeral.
I am glad you talked to your doctor about this, and he gave you a time frame which you can do this. Here also is an article that may provide information: Traveling after Hysterectomy | Airplanes
Deep breath. You have much on your plate right now. Make sure you take care of yourself during your recovery. You only get one chance to heal right.

Air Travel after abdominal hysterectomy
Hi,
I'm sorry to hear that this is happening at all and around the same time!! It's an emotional time anyway and this would make it so much harder!! I totally understand wanting to be there for your mum as I would want to be also.
I'm 4 1/2 weeks post surgery I haven't travelled by air but the thought of sitting in that position for that long even now makes me feel uneasy. Everyone's recovery is different so this may not be an issue for you but I couldn't sit for that long it would be too painful.
But good on you for following doctors instructions and I really hope it all works out for you and your mum!!

Air Travel after abdominal hysterectomy
I'm so sorry to hear about your mother; I hope things turn out okay for her. I don't have experience with air travel after surgery either, but as I've seen on this site, it is possible with a few few precautions. Firstly, your airline will probably require official clearance from your surgeon. Secondly, as SurprisedInNB mentioned, you will have a weight restriction, so you'll need someone else to handle your luggage. Thrdly, you'll want to avoid prolonged walking or standing, so ask your airline or airport staff if you can borrow a wheelchair, or have "skip the line" access through the various checkpoints. You can also play the "just had surgery" card to request an aisle seat, so you're not all scrunched in, and you can get up and take walks without disturbing your seatmates. To avoid blood clots, ask your surgeon about taking a low dose aspirin. Sending you my warmest hugs, and best wishes for your continued recovery!

Re: Air Travel after abdominal hysterectomy
Ladies,
Thanks for all the replies and sorry it took so long for me to get back. I have decided to cancel my trip as the risks are too high. I am also home recovering from my TAH done on 9/29 and am feeling pretty good. This numbness I have around my stomach area is a weird feeling, hope it does not last too long but I suppose it is helping with the pain. Otherwise so far so good. I decided to shower every other day so I don't get my incision wet too often. I really want it to heal well and am paranoid of getting an infection.
