Infection, NO appetite and NO energy

Hello Everyone!

I am at the 4 week mark from a TAH with tubes, ovaries, and nodes also removed due to cancer.

Last weekend I was experiencing extreme abdominal pain and was running a high fever. After a phone consult with my oncologist and a visit to Urgent Care I end up in the emergency room. After numerous blood tests and a CT scan it was determined that I have an abdominal infection.

I was admitted for 3 days with IV antibiotics. Upon release I was given an oral antibiotic script for Amoxicillan for 7 days.

At this stage I have absolutely NO energy and absolutely NO appetite. Is this 'normal'? Has anyone else experienced this? I felt better leaving the hospital right after surgery than I do now. I fear that not eating is not giving my body the nourishment it needs to heal. On the other hand, I'm trying to listen to my body and I'm thinking it is not giving me an appetite for a reason. My husband's opinion is that because it takes so much energy for the body to digest food, it needs to use that energy to heal.

At this stage I feel I should be MUCH further along than I am. I'm due to return to work in 2 weeks but fear my mind and body will not be ready.

Any advice is greatly appreciated! This is the BEST website and I've learned alot!

Sincerely,

Deb

Infection, NO appetite and NO energy

Hi Deb,

I have the same problems with no energy and no appetite. I had mine in Dec 07 and still have days when I'm not hungry and like I could sleep all day. It takes everything I have to make it thru the day. And then I'll have great days and cram everything into that day to catch up.
My doctor (male) thinks it's all in my head, but not his PA, she says it's because they lift the intestines out and they need to settle back down.

Infection, NO appetite and NO energy

Hey Deb,

I am really sorry you are suffering so much. I had a post op complications, deep vein thrombosis and I was hospitalized for 9 days. I ate almost nothing in 9 days.

When I got home I too was so weak. It is really important, I learned to eat. It doesn't have to be much but whatever bland food you can get in ... toast, yogurt, fresh fruit, potatos?? Protein, zinc and vitamin C are the three most important components to getting better as per the three docs treating me and my daily visiting nurses.

Could you manage a smoothie with some nutriants in it ... like a blender drink?

It will take time ... give it time ... you have been through so very much.

Hugs and be good to YOU!
Tracy

Sorry to hear about the things you are going through. First, are you anemic? Tiredness was one of my biggest problems before and after surgery. It has improved a lot since I am taking RX Chromagen twive a day to increase my H & H. Have u tried drinking Ensure or Boost? I love them. And they will provide some type of nutrition for you since u have no appetite. Know that u are in our prays. Sending hugs your way.
