Anyone told NOT to do Bowel Prep?... Also, question about eating day before...

Just wondering if anyone else was told that. Mine said not to do any bowel prep, so I won't. I was actually glad I didn't have to put myself through that! But now I'm wondering why they wouldn't have me do that. What can happen if I don't?

My doctor also didn't say much about eating the day before... just not to eat after midnight the night before surgery (I have surgery at 9:30 am on Wednesday). I'm just wondering if I should change my diet any the day before?? I see some people are told very specific things to eat the day before (and what not to eat).

I wouldn't worry too much about it, and just follow your doctor's instructions. Consider yourself lucky. My doctor told me I would be cursing him about an hour after drinking the special "beverage". Good luck!!

Thank you! It just seemed strange to me that so many of you are having to do bowel cleanses, and I've been told not to. I hope it doesn't make constipation more of an issue afterwards! But hey, I can do without drinking all that yucky stuff! I feel for those of you that have to drink it though!

One more thing...On these forums I have heard of some ladies who don't have to do it, so you're certainly not alone, just LUCKY!! :-)

No bowel prep for me. Just no eating after midnight and no water after my morning pills (Prilosec). My surgery was at 9 am a few weeks ago and I was fine. So, yeah, same here. I ate at 11:30 the night before surgery and had a full glass of water with my pill. They said I could, so I did. And I STILL woke up in recovery asking when I could have pizza

I asked my nurse about this and she made it sound like it was a personal choice of the dr and how they were taught. I am just thankful I don't have to go through it!

I had bowel sounds about 8 hours after surgery and a BM the next day. I take stool softeners because of pain pills (they constipate me) but since I've reduced those, I am stopping the stool softeners pretty soon, too.

AND...I had pizza that night and was released the next morning. Hope it goes as well for you. I was SO glad to be home to recover. Hate hospitals

I did not have to prep but it's been 4 days since I've had a bm and I'm kind of wishing I had. I have bowel sounds but nothing but gas is moving through there.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I guess I'll just follow my doctor's orders to a "T" and be glad that I'm in that "lucky" group that doesn't have to do a cleanse!

Hi SL- I too was told no need for a prep, & my surgeon then said "if you really want to drink gallons of stuff I'll let you do it"....ya, right buddy!
Just because ive been on narcotic (constipating) meds im going to take a stool softener the day b4 & am of. I am hoping to go in as "not full" of stool as possible & will try to eat lighter things the day b4- & will make sure to have fruit & veggies. I got horribly constipated after a prior surgery & vowed I wudnt do it again (had been on such strong pain meds & lost track of "movements"). You will do great! Just keep track of when you go or dont go- that way you can act on anything b4 its too bad (with your doctor's ok of course).
