hysterectomy- right decison for ovarian pain

i have had ovarian pain everyday now for 15 mths. i have had an u/s, with no diagnosis. there has been no explanation. the pain started on the right and is now on the left as well. i refuse to use hormonal treatment options because that is part of the reason i am in this predicament in the first place. (had mirena iud when pain started.) as of right now, a hysterctomy (with or without the removal of ovaries(dr hasnt made up mind yet)) has been decided upon as the best course of action. the pain is daily and has been intruding in my life for over a year. if there was another way to help with the pain without surgery or artificial hormones, i would choose to do so, otc pain medications do not work on this pain. i am kind of young to have a hysterectomy (26), but if thats what it takes to get my life back, so be it. right now my surgery is scheduled for august 6, 2008. i am going to get a second opinion bc so far by what ive gathered there could be some tests done to see what could be wrong. does anyone have any suggestions as to what else could be done?

have you had a laparoscopy and had your ovaries looked at to see if they are causing your pain?
if your ovaries are the cause of the problem, you might want to think about having just the ovaries removed. why would your dr want to do a hysterectomy for ovarian pain?

hysterectomy- right decison for ovarian pain

i forgot to mention, i also have polysystic ovaries, multiple miscarriages, irregular periods, and there was a couple other things he mentioned, but i cant remember what they were. what i dont understand is at one appointment he was going to take all of it, and at another, he was going to leave the ovaries. he wants me to go under anesthesia as little as possible, and cause me as little pain as possible, is his reasoning behind not doing a laporoscopy. he said he was planning a lavh so he could look before everything was taken out, so he could do it all at once.

hysterectomy- right decison for ovarian pain

I have had right ovary pain (feels like ovulation pain) since 2004 after #3 was born. I used to get it daily but than it seemed to be from when I ovulate to when my period starts. But it is starting to last longer again. I have had an u/s, MRI and colonoscopy and nothing has ever been found. But since I am having very irregular and long periods my ob listed a hyst as an option.

Now my pain is not bad, but irritating and I don't think I should have to deal with it. I have done b/c pills and they made me crazy. I tried an IUD and hated it cause the cramping never went away.

Now I was going to do an ablation but my ob said it might help with the bleeding but not the pain so tha is why he said he would take my uterus and right ovary.

So if you dr is going to leave your ovaries how will that take away the pain?

have you gotten a second opinion? its always a good idea to get another dr's opinion. you are very young to be put into surgical menopause and start with hormone replacement therapy. has he discussed that with you?
if he says he wants to leave the ovaries, how will that help with your ovarian pain if he takes just your uterus and cervix?
do lots of research, see as many dr's as possible (as a hysterectomy is major surgery and its outcome is not always positive), and make the best informed decision that you can. i wish you the best of luck.

hysterectomy- right decison for ovarian pain

i dont understand how leaving the ovaries will help the pain, either. im a little confused as to why he would change his mind from one appointment to another.

going back on bc is not an option for me, i have had bad side effects due to the hormones. and i am not going to get another iud. all of these problems started bc of the mirena iud. i got it when #2 was 8wks old. i had it for three months. two weeks before it came out (on its own, mind you) i had really bad stabbing pains and cramps all of a sudden. they were extremely bad. i have hurt everyday since. my dr thinks that the left hurts only when i ovulate from that side, i dont. that doesnt explain why it hurts nearly everyday as well as the right. this pain is a constant reminder that i will not have anymore children. i got pregnant within a month of mirena coming out and miscarried agian due to the hormones left in my body from it. i know that there is a connecttion between the two, but my dr has not said anything about it.

i have been trying to get ahold of another dr the past few days, but for some reason the office seems to be closed. i had an appointment with them earlier this month, but i had to cancel due to not having the money to go. i also plan on going back to my dr before the surgery to find out exaclty he plans to do and what the side effects will be from the hormones if he decides to take out everything. which if i go through with it, it will only be if he takes everything. because otherwise, what would be the point.

I had TVH, left ovaries in January and have been having ovarian pain on and off, I never had this prior to surgery so I am not sure how leaving your ovaries would be a solution. I have developed several ovarian cysts since my hysterectomy.

i have an appointment next week with another dr. if my dr had not told me two different things at the appointments i had and had not said the second time that he was going to leave my ovaries, i wouldnt have any questions at all. i have a family history of early hysterectomies, so i am looking at having to have it done in about 10yrs anyway. so if he was going to take my ovaries, i would gladly go ahead and get it done, but i dont see the point in doing it now if my ovaries are going to be left bc there is a possiblity that i will have to have it done again in later years to have them removed as well. why go through it twice? thats why im so confused as to if this is the right choice or not.

You need to tell the dr what you want to do. If he does not take the ovaries than how would the pain go away?

I meet again with my dr yesterday and I decided on the LAVH. I like the idea that he is going to look at some of my other organs. He will also take the right side that is causing my pain.

Good luck.

well see, another problem is, insurance wont pay for it all to come out without there being something wrong with it all, or for a good reason. but my dr has said that there is good reason. if he hadnt given me two different answers, i wouldnt be having any second thoughts. he is going to do an lavh, like you, havehope, and its what i want, i just dont want to have to go through it again later if he leaves anything behind. thats why im so apprehensive aobut the whole thing. i found out today, that bc of my husbands job, he is going to be out of town when the surgery is scheduled and so i am going to have to postpone it for a few more months. right now its looking like the earliest i can have it done will be november instead of august. im hoping this other dr has another option i can try until then.
