New here, confused and nervous (m)

and will be scheduled for a TAH sometime, hopefully, in mid-January.

I visited my OB/GYN a couple of weeks ago after suffering with awful cramping for 3 out of every 4 weeks and irregular periods since, well, since after the birth of my first child over 8 years ago. I had a NovaSure ablation done September 2006 that was supposed to help with the ungodly cramping and bleeding. While it did help with the heavy bleeding, "monthly stuff" (severe cramping, irregularity) still interferes with my life. I've tried birth control pills also...they cause severe migraines and when it comes down to cramps or migraines I can at least still function to some degree with the cramps.

Anyhow, my doc said I was down to two options: continue to suffer or have a hysterectomy.

I'm obese and have had 3 c-sections (3/99, 7/02 & 11/05), laproscopic pelvic surgery (1996, r/o endometriosis), laproscopic gall bladder surgery (3/06) and NovaSure ablation (9/06). My doc has said because of the amount of scar tissue that a TAH is the only way to go. He's hoping to leave the cervix intact. I also have severe pain on the right side that seems to originate in the ovary/tube area so he will also remove that.

My doc had mentioned hysterectomy being a possibility when I went for my PAP this past spring but now that its "for real" I'm a little (OK, a lot) freaked out.

I went ahead and signed the consent and called today to schedule. I'm waiting for the nurse to call back with a date.

I didn't really ask any questions at my appointment. He said it would be very similar to a c/s and having been through 3 I couldn't think of anything to ask. Should I have asked anything? He said there was no need to come back for a pre-op visit; just schedule and the office would take it from there. He's been my doc for 14+ years so there's a fairly solid level of trust on both our parts...

Thanks.
