3+ weeks post hysterectomy: Any unexplained weight loss?

Hi everyone,

Has anyone had any unexplained weight loss since surgery? I'm tiny (barely 5' tall and usually 115lbs) and I came out of hospital at 120lbs from the added fluids. Now, 3 weeks later, I am only 107lbs and I'm eating normally. That's a lot of weight for someone as small as me.

Anyone else experienced unexplained weight loss (or gain I suppose).

TIA.

Re: Any unexplained weight loss?

Yes, it is very common to loose weight following surgery, mainly due to lower appetite in the first few weeks.
Most report the weight is back after a month or two when you go back to your normal eating habits, etc.

Yes, me too. I am 6 weeks post op, have lost about 7 pounds. Have had a great appetite since surgery. All that I can think is that surgery was hard on my body and healing and recovery uses a lot of energy and calories.

Re: 3+ weeks post hysterectomy: Any unexplained weight loss?

Hi, So far, I've lost@ 15 lbs since my surgery on Jan.8th. But I'm happy about it because I have needed to lose weight, but this certainly wasn't the method to lose weigh I would have chosen. :-).

I think its mainly because my insides have been so messed up and are healing daily. I haven't been hungry much. I have also had to eat very carefully due to it upsetting my stomach, bowel, and everything in my gut area.

Re: 3+ weeks post hysterectomy: Any unexplained weight loss?

When you say "unexplained", I take to to mean that you feel you have been eating normally and still have lost weight.

I have lost about the same as you, but I know that I have been eating less, with a lower appetite, and having some nasuea, bloating, etc... so it makes sense to me of course that I have lost some weight.

With your weight loss, if indeed you have been eating the same amount, it is likely just your body using the extra energy for healing. A body healing from surgery or illness can often require many more calories than we realize to complete those important healing processes. Sometimes your appetite will kick up and let you know this, but sometimes it may not. I am a nurse and when I worked in the rehab unit, the post trauma patients would receive much higher calorie diets for an extended period of time to facilitate and support healing.

So if you are concerned and feel up to, I might just try to eat more. Make it nutrient dense, healthy food and see how you do. Nut butters, protein shakes with healthy fats, etc...

If you continue to lose more weight though despite eating more calories consistently, just mention it to your doctor, as there is always the possibility of something else going on like hyperthyroidism.

Best of luck.

Re: 3+ weeks post hysterectomy: Any unexplained weight loss?

I also lost weight i did not necessarily need to loose. I had issues and repeat surgeries so lost a total of 20 lbs, and have kept it off. I changed some of my eating habits while recovering and i think that has been an overall good call, even after my bso in dec i have not gained. I do tend to fluctuate 1-2 lbs but it goes back again within a couple days.

Re: 3+ weeks post hysterectomy: Any unexplained weight loss?

I lost a good amount of weight as well, that I couldn't afford. I was always 5'8" and 130lbs, and by the time it was all behind me, I was 113lbs. My hipbones looked like a hatrack. It was not good.

It wasn't unexplained, though. I was just eating less since I tend not to like eating when under the weather and prior to my surgery, I couldn't pass food -- in or out -- without drama. My tastes also changed significantly post-surgery, and I could not stand to eat sweet things, which meant it was hard to start eating normally again until I had recovered quite fully (around 6 or 7 weeks out).

The good news is that after my recovery, things did start to even out, and my current weight is exactly what I weighed before minus the near-three-pounds of the fibroid. (The surgeons took my uterus, tubes, and cervix, and left my ovaries in.)

So don't worry quite yet; seven weeks is still a bit early. How much did the material they removed from you weigh?

Re: 3+ weeks post hysterectomy: Any unexplained weight loss?

Yes! I'm losing 2 lbs a week and I can't afford the weight loss. My Dr asked me if I'm eating and my parents are worried about it. I eat but it's not enough. I'm on the go non stop so I'm burning what I consume.
