Are staples the norm?

I've been reading about the staples. I forgot to mention it to my dr yesterday, but my body rejects metal very painfully on its own (tried pierced ears and naval twice). Not only that, but because my two week mark falls the week of Christmas, I have to wait 3 weeks before she checks me again. Should I call back and make another appointment with her to discuss this, or can they use something other than metal staples?

Thank you all for all the help and support on here.

Staples are pretty much the norm, but they'll obviously have to use something else if you have a metal allergy. I've seen posts that mention some type of glue and I've definitely seen posts before that mention a metal allergy. Why not try a forum search and see what it throws up?

A phone call will do no harm, if only to reassure you that metal allergies aren't uncommon and that there are alternatives available.

Good luck!

Are staples the norm?

I had staples and I too am allergic to metals...even gold. The staples they use are, I believe, surgical grade steel (not the same as surgical steel in jewelry, but the kind of metal used in replacement joints and pins). I didn't react at all. Maybe have your doc give you a staple and tape it to your skin for a day or two to make sure you don't react?

I am also allergic to metals but I had 2 surgeries 17 years ago and I never had a reaction.

I am also having my hysterectomy the same week as you and never thought that the 2 week mark will fall during Christmas therefore it will be longer to see the doctor.

Good luck with your surgery!

Heather
