Re: Anyone still have the catheter at discharge?

During my hysterectomy one of my ureters was severed and had to be re implanted to my bladder so I was sent home with a supra-pubic catheter and bag. Its a huge hassle having to drag the bag around attached to a walker. I won't get to see my urologist (or I should say his assistant) until Monday April 2nd. I hope to find out what the next step to getting rid of the cath/bag, is going to be.

The bag/cath scare me to death. (Germs, infections etc) So I hope that my ureters/bladder have healed enough that I can get rid of them. The doctors seem to think there is a chance that I might have to keep the cath for good if the bladder doesn't empty/fill well enough on its own and man I sure don't want to keep it forever.

Re: Anyone still have the catheter at discharge?

I'm hoping to avoid a UTI especially as I am already on Keflex for an incision infection. It is hard to keep the catheter clean when using the bathroom and trying to shower.

I appreciate all the responses knowing others have dealt with the catheter issue at home too. I do hope it will come out tomorrow at my nurse appointment where I will try again to urinate without it. They will do an output test where they infuse sterile saline into the bladder and you have to void what they put in or more otherwise the catheter goes back in. Crossing my fingers!

This sounds like it might be the test I will be having come Monday. I will keep my fingers crossed that both of us pass the test with flying colors!

KaylaV - Yes, I wish you good luck tomorrow too! It is such a hassle and infection risk to be dragging these bags around.

Re: Anyone still have the catheter at discharge?

To avoid infection I am keeping a pump dispenser of hand sanitizer on my nightstand that I use whenever I have to unhook the cath bag. I hope this plus lots of hand washing and small rubber alcohol wipes for the tubing will keep a UTI away.

Re: Anyone still have the catheter at discharge?

I went home on antibiotics because I had the catheter to avoid infection. I am still on them. My urine was clean as a whistle when I got in to see the urologist last week.
Good luck next week guys.

Re: Anyone still have the catheter at discharge?

Sasha, I went home with a catheter two weeks ago after just a posterior repair. I felt like I could go, but the swelling was just closing off the urethra. I had it removed 72 hours later, no problems. Just remember to keep the level of the bag lower than your bladder, so there is no back flow. Wash with regular soap and water, in the shower, its OK to get the bag wet, just dry it off. Good luck, and push fluids!

Re: Anyone still have the catheter at discharge?

Same thing happened to me. My surgery was on March 27th and my hysterectomy included a slingback. I went home on Wednesday evening and returned to the urologists office on Friday morning where it was removed and confirmed that it was working on it's own. I was told it may have been because of the length of time i was under anesthia probably was the issue or it could have been the swelling that caused the issue. But I remember how uncomfortable I was you couldn't sit right and of course you I felt gross because I couldn't clean my self up properly. I had the walking bag strapped to my leg for day and the large bag hung to a nightstand drawer below the bed for night. Sound familiar? Good luck to you!

Re: Anyone still have the catheter at discharge?

Thanks to all who wrote with encouragement! Today I was able to have the catheter removed. Freedom! They said to watch my output for awhile. I did pass the saline infusion test but it feels like it may take a little while to feel normal again.

KaylaV - I hope you got yours removed today too!
