OK - so now I'm getting a little anxious

Hi all:

I've been wandering around this site for three weeks or so now but haven't posted much. I'm 11 days away from my surgery and it's finally making me a little anxious. Thanks to this site alot of my questions and concerns have been answered. I have my Pre-op on Monday, Jan 3rd and know all the questions to ask now. My biggest concern is I suffer from depression and am currently on Zoloft and Wellbutrin. I have been on the Zoloft for a while but was put on the Wellbutrin in September when my OB/GYN tried to shrink my lining and fibroids with a course of Lupron shots. She was originally planning on doing an endrometrial ablation instead of surgery. Well... the first Lupron shot sent my depression in a very quick downward spiral and my Pysch. Dr. called the OB/GYN and said no more Lupron. Happy to say the meds are working great but I am hoping they will let me take them the day of my surgery. I get a nasty headache and very dizzy if I don't take the meds. And from the posts I've read it seems the first time they make you get up there is aproblem with dizziness. And on top of all that, I need to take the meds with food. My Pysch. Dr said I could take them after surgery since mine is scheduled for 8am. but there's still the issue of food. I'm thinking of sneaking in some crackers or something just so that my stomach won't get upset. Oh well, I've rambled enough, just had to get it off my chest. Thanks for listening - this place is great!!!

I think you need a !! I have also suffered with depression and I've taken a few different meds for it. I have also experienced the near withdrawal symptoms from being late with a dose of Wellbutrin (with me it was a "crawling skin" sensation).

Please discuss this concern with your surgeon. He/she, along with the rest of the hospital staff, will work with you to make sure you are as comfortable as possible the day of your surgery. They may have you take those meds that morning, but don't do it if they don't tell you to!

I'd also strongly caution you against trying to sneak in any food. They really mean it when they say they don't want you to eat or drink anything before surgery or after surgery except as they direct. You can get very ill if you consume anything before you should!

Good luck to you! I hope others will post with their experiences with taking regularly-prescribed medications on surgery day.

I wouldn't sneak food into the hospital either. They do mean it when they say light eating the day and night before and no eating in the morning prior to surgery. It is for your own good ... no !

As far as your meds go, the hospital staff should be aware of all the meds you are on and will work with you accordingly. If it makes you feel better, make mention of your concerns again and again. Even to the nurses on the morning of your surgery.

Try not to let this particular issue bother you. You do need to trust that the surgical and nursing staff will handle your meds for you.

Concentrate on getting yourself ready mentally and getting your house in order as much as you can before you go in.

Hope it all works out for you!

Best wishes,
Sarah

Me again....

Thanks ladies for your support. It was really a passing thought about sneaking the food in. I am one that listens to what the doc says and plays by the rules. I had gallbladder out 12 years ago. Even though I've heard the gallbladder surgery is alot easier than a hyst, I did do what the doctor said and behaved myself. It's so great to have this site, my DH isn't much support emotionally. But he will be taking two weeks off from work when I come home - so at least I can have a "loyal subject" wait on me hand and foot. anyway, thanks for caring!
