New to HysterSisters

I am new to this site. I am having a "total abdominal hysterectomy" on January 31, 2007. I have multiple uterine fibroids and I am 50 yrs old. I am really nervous about this, my sister had the same thing done 20 yrs ago. She has told me horror stories about hers. I am glad I found this site for help

Welcome Dottie!
Things have changed in 20 years, don't worry!!! You will find much support on this site, the women here are wonderful, like family that really " gets it ". Just remember, we all heal at a different pace and have different tolerance for pain, so one women's " horror story " can be another's walk in the park... stay strong, you will be ok!!!

and big hugs.
I had a tah/bso ( total abdominal hyst with both ovaries and tubes removed). I was 54 at the time of my surgery, other than a reaction to some meds and a few minor things, I did very well. I'm still doing well at 4 years post op
I think that often you just don't hear the good stories. You hear more from the ones who are having problems because they're likely to need info and extra support.

I hope that your surgery and recovery are smooth and complication free.

I had a TAH in nov at 46. Its true I had some complications. But I would do it again in a heartbeat. (I had fibroids and a polyp on my cervix.) I lost my sister in Oct to Leiomyosarcoma, a cancer which started in the uterus. So I was more than happy to eliminate that possibility.

Hi Dottie,

I was 56 at the time of my TAH-BSO,Oct.13, 06. for extensive uterine fibroids, endometrial hyperplasia, w/atypia. I was my doc's first surgery on Friday morning, came home after lunch on Sunday. I was off regular pain meds by 3 wks. post-op, and now, at 16 weeks post-op I can honestly say I feel better than I have in several years.

I was really, really, scared to have my surgery, but found great information and encouragement on this website. The absolute worst part for me turned out to the be waiting. The significant post-op pain was over in about two weeks. I walked in the hospital, as soon as I was allowed, and continued at home. As you will see from the posts here, everyone has a different experience, and a different healing time frame, different response to pain and pain meds, but a hysterectomy can be a blessed relief, and give great improvement to your quality of life, and for some it will mean extension of life.

Everyone here understands your fear. You can always post on here and get a sympathetic ear and usually a suggestion or two to make things easier.

Good luck with your surgery.

good experience

I had a TAH on Dec. 15th and came home on the 17th without having to take anything other than advil. I am 49 and had the surgery because of several uterine fibroids. The surgery went fine and the nurses at the castle were great. I also walked as much as I could as soon as they would let me. I continued to walk when I got home and I think this helped with the pain and recovery process. I think I am one of the lucky ones with a very good doctor. I don't regret my decision one bit and wish I had done it 2 years earlier. I have more energy now, even though I am only six weeks out. Returned to work last Friday and it was great to be back. Wish you well with your surgery. I hope everything goes fine.

Hi Dottie! Welcome to the family. Most of us do have good experiences and even when we don't, there are loving Sisters here to offer advice, love and understanding. Who could ask for anything more?

Hi Dottie, I'm having TAH on the 31st too. Dr is going to leave my ovaries as long as everything is okay with them. I'm 35yrs old and so nervous about surgery also. I'm wishing you the best for your surgery.
