Pre-op Appt. Question About Bowels?

hi, my question may be a little gross. but i have had chronic constipation for 5 years along w/ a list of other stuff dating back 10 years.
i have had to take double prep stuff and have two - colonoscopy about 3yrs ago....made me so sick and killed my guts.
i had to take 'MOM' for a different test and that made me extrmely ill.
my concern is, what if the prep appt. doesn't clean out...could / would my lavh be cancelled? or should i find something to take - over the counter - before the prep appt.? i just hate laxitives and stool softeners.
i have always like the foods that are suppose to be good on your bowels. i can eat and drink prunes - juice ( one of my favorites) for a week straight and still cannot get back normal bowel movements.
but i am certain that after the surgery, my bowel problem, most likely related to the endo, fibroids and cysts, will slowly go back to normal.
i have waited so long to find out what the matter was and am worried that surgery could be cancelled if something does not meet the requirements. any and all ideas are welcome. thank you. mecelena

Pre-op Appt. Question About Bowels?

Well I don't think theyd' cancel your surgery but every dr is different, because I didn't even have a bowel prep at all. I would call the office and see what they have to say.
I had problems with my bowels before surgery, going once every three days or four, but now I go three to four times per day and I've been excersing and it seems the more i excersize the more I need to "go", and I'm eating so much less, and proudly have lost nearly 34 pounds. To me being regular again was a major bonus of surgery that i wasn't expecting. Also the fact that I no longer get heartburn. Guess my uterus was so big that it was squishing all the other parts up causeing the problems.

Pre-op Appt. Question About Bowels?

I also have had bowel problems and was instrusted to use the Fleet Prep Kit #1--I was on a liquid diet the day before and then started the kit @4pm I think--it worked and cleaned me out, I chose not to use the suppository because I felt like I had gone enough----HOWEVER my dr did tell me afterwards that he has had patients that did not do what was instructed and only found out after he opened them up and had to close them because it was not clean--but every dr is different so I will tell him your concerns before hand--maybe it depends on what type of hyst you are having--

Good Luck

Pre-op Appt. Question About Bowels?

S

It sounds like you haven't had your pre op apt yet. If that's the case, when you do have it, and if they instruct you to do a bowel prep, they will tell you exactly what they want. Bring up your concerns at that time with them. Tell them about previous problems and let your DR decide what will happen if you are supposed to do a bowel prep and you don't think everything was cleaned out.

Try to relax! Best wishes.

thank you

thank you for your replies.....i remeber talking w/ the doctor about the side effects of the lupron and had brought up the chronic constipation and how i have tried to rectify, but hate laxitives and such.
she remarked that there was a prep that needed to be done, it would help get ready for surgery.
but, i didn't ask the right question - what happens if it does not clean me out?
now, i will ask the 'right' question about the bowel prep. the pre-op appt. is two days before the surgery.
it really helps to have you all here. thank you so much. mecelena
