Almost 57 years old LAVH planned, suggestions?

Hi Sisters,

I am almost 57 years old and planning to have a LAVH in January 2005. Any suggestions on post op ( or pre op) efforts to make the recovery or surgery go well due to the age factor?

Are you a walker by any chance? I think having spent a lot of time walking prior to surgery was one of the best things I did for myself physically and mentally. It helped in every aspect of my surgery and recovery.

Preparing yourself mentally for the surgery and recovery is also important. We may not bounce back quite as quickly as these 20 year olds, but we have a lot of determination! A friend of mine had a hysterectomy the same day I did, and she said she just hated her doctors always prefacing every sentence with "at your age..." The last laugh was hers as she bounced back at unbelieveable speed! I think it just depends on how much you are having done; are they removing everything, are you having any bladder work done, any other repairs, etc. Keep your thoughts and attitude positive, ask about anything that concerns you, and make sure you have your home prepared for your return from the hospital. Also, some help for a couple of weeks may be necessary.

I had my surgery as a LAVH. One thing to keep in mind is that although the external incisions are smaller with a LAVH there is still plenty of internal work done. My doctor told me the initial recovery would be 6-8 weeks. Be sure to allow your body adequate time to heal.
