Shocker when I went to pre-op today
I had my pre-op appointment today and got the shock of my life. They did an EKG/ECG(I always mix them up.) and they asked me when I had my heart attack. I said "What?". It showed that I had a heart attack. He showed me on the graph. So sometime between mid July(when I last had test) and now I had a heart attack. I said how would I not notice I was having a heart attack( at this point I'm thinking this guy is nuts I should run for my life). He said I was probably asleep when it happened. So now I have to have an arterial monitor during surgery.

I think a second opinion is in order here. Hope all goes well for you!

Re: Shocker when I went to pre-op today
Sweetie, I am sorry you are dealing with this. What a shock!
But, that is why they do an EKG - to check the heart out to see what condition it is in. They can then take appropriate steps for your safety during surgery.
Are you going to a heart specialist after your hysterectomy surgery?
Good luck to you...

Re: Shocker when I went to pre-op today
At some point another ECG will be a good idea, and a cardiology consult. But an extra monitor during surgery might be a case of better safe than sorry. If you might have a cardiac problem, good to know so it can get checked out, even if it is a shock. You may be lucky you had the test, if what they said is accurate. Best wishes for your surgery.

Re: Shocker when I went to pre-op today
They are going to run the test again the day of my surgery. He told me to call my family dr and let her know so she can send me to a specialist. I told him I would but will wait till after surgery since I will have a bunch of appointments then. My blood pressure was extremely high today which isn't normal for me, the nurse initially brushed it off and said I was probably nervous and I had informed her I had a headache. So I will definitely be getting a second opinion and more then likely see a cardiologist.
Thanks for all the good wishes.

Re: Shocker when I went to pre-op today
Bingokitten - my mom had the same thing --- further testing and they determined that she probably did NOT have a heart attack. I think I took the initial news worse than she did. I'm not saying you didn't have a heart attack - just that sometimes test results don't show the whole picture. Very unnerving news to be surprised with, though! I am sure they will be very thorough in all they do with you.

That's good to hear, hopefully it's the same in my case as well. He was explaining the arterial monitor to me, he said it measures every single heart beat from inside the vein, can't be much more thorough then that.

Re: Shocker when I went to pre-op today
WOW......that would be a shock!
We went thru a heart attack with my mom 2 years ago. She had one, didn't realize it...thought it was the flu. 2 weeks later, she had another one and this time she was a little more mindful of what her body was telling her. There are a lot of women who have had mild heart attacks that don't even know it. My Aunt is one of them. Women's symptoms can be so different from men's that we don't think about it.
Definately get a second opinion. And take care of yourself!!!
Hugs~

Re: Shocker when I went to pre-op today
I'm so surprised this has happened to so many people. Talking with some friends yesterday, either they or someone they knew has had a mild heart attack and not known.
One of my friends said she had heartburn and the tums and other antacid stuff wasn't helping so she called her dr and was having a mild heart attack.
I always pictured heart attacks as being like you see on t.v., severe pain, arm clutching, color draining, trouble breathing etc.
Thanks for the good wishes and I'm definitely going to pay closer attention to what my body is saying.
