Laparoscopic Hysterectomy
Hi everyone,
I am new to this site. I am due to have my op next Monday (25th March). I am feeling a bit nervous at the moment but happy as well as I have on-going problems for years. My procedure will be a laparoscopic hysterectomy - leaving my ovaries. I am sure a few of you have had this procedure and I am wondering about recovery time. I want to be back at work in two weeks - I sit at a desk most of the time. I feel healthy and take multi-vitamins at the moment. After reading some of your experiences it looks like it might take forever to get back on my feet. Also I am very curious about how long it will be before my sex life will get back to normal. I have tried asking my doctor about this but again after reading your comments I am not sure if I have been miss informed. My doctor seems to think I will be able to have sex about 4-6 weeks after the op. I am getting more nervous by the minute now. Can someone please give me some advice. Much appreciated.
Annie

Laparoscopic Hysterectomy
I was back to my sit-down job 1/2 days at 3 1/2 weeks, full days at four weeks (because I had a meeting I had to go to--but I took the next day off). It was tough and I was glad to get home to my little bed at the end of each day. Sitting is actually kind of strenuous when you're healing, so whenever you do go back, try to lie down during lunch or something if you can.
My doctor often sends laparoscopic hyst patients back to work at three weeks if they have a sit-down job, but that's to keep them from grocery shopping and cleaning house, which are more strenuous. I think she figures it's safer for them to get worn out at work sitting behind a desk.
Your doctor may clear you for sex at 4-6 weeks after surgery, but you don't have to do it until you feel ready.

Great recovery
Okay, well in 28 hours I was released from the Castle. First day home, difficult (I took 2 pain killers), second day better no pain killers. Worst thing was the gas.... Day five I went to the office for a couple of hours and did my email. Day eight I was back to work as normal. Mostly computer work.
Now, I am unusual and I guess very very lucky. So do not push yourself. My recovery was fantastic and today (three weeks later) I have to keep reminding myself not to lift etc etc, because I have had absolutely no soreness for about two weeks....
Also, great news, DR called with the pathology report today and it's all over.. Just the hormone thing now, LOTs.
Good luck, remember we are all different, listen to your Doctor and your body.

Laparoscopic Hysterectomy
I would prepare my employer for a longer absence. It is probably easier to come back earlier than expected, than the other way around. Many have gone back part time at first. Would that be an option for you? Also, remember once you go back it may be hard to reverse that if you find you are not ready. I LOOKED great to everyone long before I FELT really pretty good.
Listen to your own body. I want to insert A WORD OF CAUTION here. Alot of us felt better the first two weeks than we did at the 3 and 4 week marks. My anesthesiologist told be one pain med would remain active in my system for about two weeks. It must have taken the edge off for a while.
Don't hurry yourself. ( Peveril is way ahead of the majority of us. She is one of those superwomen we occasionally hear from on this site. We are all wishing we were as fast as you, Peveril. You did fantastic.
We ALL wanted to be completely better in a week or two, but the truth is this: The AVERAGE recovery time STILL is 6-8 weeks. And believe me, SITTING IS AN ACTIVITY POST OP. It puts pressure on the healing tissues inside the abdomen. It's better not to do too much of it at first.
Taking "reclining breaks" after being upright for some time, even when you are feeling quite good REALLY DOES HELP. That is a very good suggestion. I just took a trip to see my son get married. I'm almost 3 months post. The thing that was the hardest was sitting so long in airports and airplanes, and people's living rooms, etc.. Laying down every few hours, even for 5-10 minutes, still makes alot of difference for me. If you can get up and walk around that helps, too.
I was an average ( just a little on the slow-side) healer.
Sex was not approved until 8 weeks post. At 10 weeks post my tummy was alot less sore, just suddenly, and has stayed that way. I still get a little sore and tired but it is just sort of annoying, not painful. It is usually gone in the A.M. If I still feel sore or swollen in the morning I take it easier for a day or two.
Here's to your speedy and uneventful recovery.

Laparoscopic Hysterectomy
Hi!
I am scheduled for the same procedure on 3/27/02. My doctor has told me that many of his patients are ready to return to work in three weeks, driving in one. I am planning on taking at least four weeks off of work because I have tendancy to over do!!!
Most of the posts I have read on this have been very positive so I guess if we need to have this surgery then this is the way to go if you can!!! This is NOT our mothers hysterectomy!!!
I hope your visit to castle is short and your recovery speedy!
See you on the post op boards very soon!!!

Laparoscopic Hysterectomy
I had a LAVH and am ten days post op. I feel great!!! My doctor said most of his patients with LAVH return to work with in 2-4 weeks depending on their job and how they feel.
Just remember to listen to your bodies signals......it will let you know if you're overdoing it! Best wishes and good luck!

CIN 3
Hi Paula,
The levels of dysplasia are sometimes expressed as CIN 1 (moderate) CIN 2 (medium) and CIN 3 (severe) -- which is carsonoma in situ -- same thing.
Regards,
Judith

give yourself LOTS of rest breaks
Hi AnnieRose.
I had my surgery in Texas, where my folks live. The first 2 weeks I felt terrific. I slept lots and rested with my feet up too. As someone has already said, the rests LAYING DOWN really really help. It's really amazing how you use your stomach muscles for just about everything! At 3 weeks, I flew home and was really pretty exhausted by that. I think that the flying home timed out with some of the internal stitches healing/dissolving. I have heard from many here that there is a bit of a 'wall' one can hit at about 3 weeks when those stitches start to heal AND when the anesthesia is really all out of your body.
I felt I could have gone back to work at 2 weeks, butnot at 3! I took the full 6 weeks off and was glad I did. Please take as much time as you can. You only have one opportunity to heal. And whenever you go back to work, please try to build in breaks to put your feet up and your head down!

Laparoscopic Hysterectomy
Hi!! I'm having the same procedure - on the same day!! So, I added you to my buddy list so I can check on you!! You'll be in my thoughts & I hope all goes smoothly. I have the same concerns about resuming activity, and sex, although the sex part is'nt as important right this very minute. I'm young and I definatly have worries about painful intercourse and all of the other yucky things I've been reading. Take care of your body and don't rush yourself even if you get bored beyond belief. Best to you! - Amy
